Am I right in saying that although I have the door mirror switch with the folding door mirror switch, it doesn't necessarily follow that there are actually motors fitted to operate the folding function?

It has never worked anyway but I was just wondering.

One of mine does work and one doesn't. It doesn't mean the motors are missing,probably just replaced with a non electric item. This happens a lot in Japan,apparently!!

If they didn't have folding mirrors, they didn't have the switch (just the mirror adjusting part). maybe motors bust or removed.

check your wireing between the door and body. I heard a horror story at the southwest bash of a door catching fire. One of my door mirrors stopped working and when i opened the plastic cover protecting the wires i found two wires were bare, thus causing the fuse to blow. It could have been worse,

Thanks for the advice guys.

They haven't worked since i have owned her and that's nearly four years!! If the wires are bare or prone to wearing through then i think i need to check that part of the loom and avoid a possible fire.

I've got one just stopped working too, must get around to sorting it

You can see if the motors are there without removing the mirror lens,just peer through the gap in the back of the mirror, if you spot an aluminium dome shape just behind the mirror glass, then yes, you have motors fitted inside the mirrors.

Good news, mine fixed & at no cost.
Checked voltage was getting to the mirror (after removing door panel) - it was, so took it off (two bolts under the outer lower cover & one inside the door), prised the mirror off ( pull gently on the OUTER lower corner of the mirror & it pops off quite easily) unscrewed the mechanism & withdrew it from the casing ( 3 screws inside the casing, one underneath & the 3 holding the casing to the mounting). All the cogs etc were intact, so applied 12v direct across the motor, nothing happened, tried it t'other way, still nothing. Concluded motor was duff. but had a fiddle about to see if the rotation of the motor was actually doing anything, tried 12v again & it worked tried it a couple of times, all ok, reconnected it, worked as it should - boxed back up, job's a good'un for now
It was quite easy to get to really, cut the door plastic rather than peel it back to save getting the black sticky stuff from hell everywhere. The two green wires on my passenger door are the ones feeding the mirror open/close function if anyone's checking the door looom for damage (mine was ok)

Stick some sound deadening on the door panel (adhesive bitumen flashing as a cheaper alternative) while you're in there and/or a bit of waxoil, making sure not to block the drain holes in the bottom of the door.
Fingers crossed it's an easy (lucky?) fix

Well mine stopped working again on saturday , but worked again yesterday , so I think I maybe need to source a new motor.
I can't recall whether anyone found a compatible one, it looked a reasonably standard sized unit, I've got the measurements written down at home, have to dig them out when I get back from sunny France
