Temperature gauge problem

Temperature guage has just started behaving strangely.
It climbs to the 11 o'clock position when the engine warms up but then goes back to just about zero and fluctuates around the lower part of the scale.
Has anyone had this happen ?

The only problem I've had with the temp guage was it going right off the top of the scale, but this was traced to a broken earth connection on the rear of the guage. There would seem to be 3 areas where the fault may occur:

Temp sensor on the head
Gauge in the dash
Wiring between the two

You could probably eliminate the first one by getting the engine up to normal temperature then disconnecting the single wire from the sensor. The gauge should then go up or down (not sure which without trying it myself). You could then short the connection to earth & the needle should go in the opposite direction. The other option is the fault is due to a poor connection so it fluctuates as the vehicle is moving. When you remove the connector from the sensor, check the brass 'lug' is not tarnished & then maybe give the connector a little nip with pliers to tighten it up.
