18" alloys - the conclusion

I posted on several earlier threads about my woefully inadeqaute and under-inflated tyres, and my search for decent tyres for the 18" alloys that came fitted when I bought my Freda (4WD, HiTop).
I got some good help and advice from people on this forum, and Mike at Wheelquicks - so thanks. But my search for tyres was ultimately fruitless - after extensive searching I could only find two makes of tyre that seemed to fit the bill, and neither seemed satisfactory in the end. The conclusion I came to is that the wheels were just not suitable for the vehicle.
So I'm getting some 16" alloys, and hoping that my tyre woes are at an end. I'm posting this in case other people have trouble with these kind of wheels, and also to acknowledge the great resource this is for Bongo/Freda owners.
Oh... and there will soon be some 18" alloys going on to eBay.

Refresh my memory HM...unsuitable how exactly? Wheelquick supply and fit tyres suitable for Bongo's using 18" rims, they have them fitted to their own vehicle.

Hmmm. . .
Don't geddit.
My local tyre/exhaust shop had Hankooks in stock when I shod my RX8s.
I'll pick some up for you if you're really stuck, maybe set up a relay delivery . . . .

surely you meant "im getting some 22" alloys, and my bongo will look 16 times better in then end"???
im sure if you look hard enough you will find tyres with the correct load rating or is it the price that is putting you off?

That's very cheap BDC - the cheapest on the mytyres website is £85 for a 245/40x18 with a load rating of 97 (you don't wanna know Kwik-Fit prices

)

Wheelquicks have indeed fitted their own 18" alloys with what I imagine are suitable tyres, however the vehicle in question is 2WD and not a hi-top, so the load rating was lower than my requirement (96+). They couldn't find me a tyre to meet this requirement (they were very helpful, I should add). Searching the internet produced two hits, but not clear if the load rating was adequate, and by then I had come to the conclusion the tyres were sufficiently scarce to be an ongoing problem. So I've taken what I hope is a sensible decision to go with a more mainstream wheel.
I'll sell the 18" here once I can work out a fair price.
