Bongo Fury

Hi,
Can someone let me know the best way to get access to the heater fan. I have carried out a repair to the heater fan resistor but this has not fixed the problem. It has always worked on settings 1 & 4, but recently it has stopped working alltogether. What else could it be? I also notice that when I turn the rear fan on, it has only got one speed setting, is that how they all are? I will be gratefull for any suggestions as to what to try next.

The fan is located on the right hand side (looking from the front) under the bonnet. It's inside the round plastic housing below the heater air intake.

I'm writing from memory, but the way that worked for me was roughly:

1) Remove 2 push-clips at front of "wide-mouthed" ducting & pull ducting off.

2) Disconnect fan electrical connector.

3) Unbolt fuse box & lay to one side

4) Undo 2 nuts (horizontal) behind fuse box which hold ducting on

5) undo 3 screws (vertical) holding the fan housing/ducting - 1 on right, 2 on left.

6) undo 2 nuts (horizontal) at the rear right holding the fan housing/ducting to the rear bulkhead.

7) Lift & manoeuver the plastic ducting/fan housing assembly out of the bonnet space

8. undo 3 screws on the underside of the fan housing to extract the fan.

Think that's it - I might have missed a screw or bolt out but it's all self explanatory. Don't think it makes any difference which order you unbolt it in really.

Thanks Rhod, excellent detail! I will attempt to remove the fan asap, and check to see if it has seized up or whatever. I need it working for the early mornings to clear the screen.

Once you have done No.1 above the fan blades are in sight and you will be able to reach them to test if they are seized.

Actually I copied an old post, written from memory just after I changed my fan motor,

Just taken off the wide mouthed ducting and found the blades on the fan were stuck! They released quite easily and are now working. (On all 4 speeds!) I then decided to give the fan a spray with some GT50 oil, after which the fan is making a squealing noise. (not sure why!) I will see how things go and thanks to you all who helped me with this repair.
One thought on the repair of the fan resistor, I did mine without taking the resistor apart by soldering from the side. I don't think you need to dismantle it. i.e Drill the rivets out.

you could do with taking the fan motor out and giving it a service, the bottom of the fan gets rusty and stops rotating . also make sure the drain hole in the gutter above the resistor is clear then water does not get onto the resistor and cause more problems.

Yes Dave, I think a service would be the best thing for it before it gives up on me. Regarding the drain hole, thanks to the web site I keep an eye on it to make sure it's clear.
