Hi guys,

I'm getting suspicious that my scavenger fan isn't working. Occasionally the engine bay gets very hot indeed (coolant temp remains fine). I tend to notice it after a run when the car has been standing, or if the engine is running for a while and the car is stationary.

Mike has helped me with a great post on how to fit an over-ride switch but until I get the parts for that I've been out looking at it.

I can see a black terminal to the drivers seat side of the handbrake. I've unplugged that and nothing changed.

Checked all the fuses too and they all look fine.

Is the terminal by the handbrake the correct sensor, and if so can I test the fans by shorting out the 2 connectors on that cable?

I was under the impression that in order in get the Scavenger fan to come on the sensor under the drivers side in the block to the rear is disconnected, this sensor has two wires on separate terminals going into the top, dis' them turn the key and fan works, I may be wrong I'm not expert, but if I'm wrong somebody will put you right, hope this helps

Thanks for the quick reply. I did do that and waited, nothing happened. I've checked all the fuses inc under the bonnet and all looks good there.

Maybe somethings unplugged or the fan has jammed.

Yep that is thanks. Just put it all back together now, will try using a paper clip in a while and see it that makes a difference, just unplugging doesn't do anything.

Also checked the fan spins freely and it does so hopefully a power issue now. May also try running direct 12v feed to it but needs some bits for that.

Did I read the scavanger fan has a link to the ECU thingie? if so watch what you are suppling the 12v too.

Andy, your V6 may be different to diesels, but on mine unplugging the lead to the sensor by the handbrake with the ignition on will result in the fan kicking in. There is a fuse somewhere (possibly in the box under the bonnet), so might be worth eliminating that at this stage.

I tested mine ages ago apole had to bypass the switch by bridging it with a bit off wire, if it any consilation my v6er scav fan has 'i can't remember' never come on, infact apole my rad fan hardly ever kicks in either

With regards to the fan..
I noticed this while i was fitting the Mason alarm, If my engine is hot & i switch the ignition on so all the warning lights come on & the glow plug light goes out before i start the engine i can hear a fan running for a while...

Is this the scavenger fan i can hear?

I have heard mine in the same situation. You might also feel a slight rumble down at you left foot.

I'll have to check that out.
I tend to be out side the vehicle when it happens, i come back of a run & decide to do some work on the electrics...

I've only once heard the scavenger fan once in the UK - it just doesn't get that hot normally. It's reading the air temp in the engine bay.

It did come on a few times in 33/35 deg. heat in Europe this summer................

I know Mikes bypassed it but I'd be wary of interfering with ECU sensors, which is what you're doing when you bypass the sensor cos it may well give an input to the ECU for something else.......

Today I thought I'd test the fan again as I had no luck yesterday. Removing the sensor connector with the engine off and key out and the fan came on. Had to start the engine to stop it but glad it now works. Suspecting dirty or corroded connection as I couldn't get it to do anything yesterday.

Never noticed the scavenger fan or engine cooling fan come on, not even when they were bleeding the system having replaced a coolant hose a while back. Air con fan comes on and off with that on though.

So hoping all will be well now.
