Having read this http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM23360.htm how does a Bongo get a CO2 emissions figure?
I am not confused about how a Bongo can get a CO2 figure - it is through the eSVA test, and the document you have given the link to confirms this
hmrc in EIM23660 wrote:The importer of the car might have arranged for it to go through a version of the type approval process known as Single Vehicle Approval (SVA). Under the enhanced SVA scheme introduced in August 2001, almost all imports from outside the EU will be required to undergo the CO2 type approval test, although minor categories of vehicle are exempt. The employer should be able to find out from the importer if there is an approved CO2 emissions figure.
What I am confused about is how the figure quoted by 2sticks is £300, which is not one of the current rates, nor was it back in May 08. Bongos subject to an eSVA have been quoted here as having CO2 of 302 gm/km, putting them into the highest, ie £400, rate.
So this where the difference between a "motor caravan" and an "MPV" comes in is it? One needs the test which produces the CO2 figure and the other doesn't?

Yes. Any Bongo less than ten years old has to be converted to a motor caravan, or SVA'd.

Sorry Trev, I had a senior moment there. It was the MOT which
runs from May this year, the Tax Disk runs from 1st of December

It was Imported in May 2007, had a 6 months tax disk, and was
manufactured in year 2000.

V5 Details:
Make: - - - - - - - - - - - - -MAZDA
Model/Type - - - - - - - - - -No entry (Blank)
Date of first registration: - - 01 03 2000 - (DECL/D 2000)
Wheelplan: - - - - - - - - - - 2AXLE RIGID BODY
Revenue weight - - - - - - - -2170 KG GROSS
Taxation class: - - - - - - - - DIESAL CAR
Type of fuel - - - - - - - - - - HEAVY OIL
Cylinder capacity - - - - - - - 2490 CC
CO2 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 302 G/KM

Sorry for the confusion (I really am a very old fart).

Ah yes all makes sense now. It will cost £400 to renew your VED (road tax) in December 08 on this Bongo as it has been SVA'd and has a CO2 figure of 302 gm/km. £300 was the rate last year.

I have a question.

I have converted mine since buying it. I think it still shows plg on the reg doc and I haven't altered it. Do I need to get it altered and will it make a difference or will it be too late.

Trevor is far more qualified to answer this question than I am
and would probably need much more information, however,
I found the following information available at this link to be
extremely useful, along with other members explanations.

Hope this helps.

following equipment:

• seats and table
• sleeping accommodation which may be converted from the seats
• cooking facilities
• storage facilities.
-still seems to me that the mid-seats, folded flat, become either part of a bed - or folded over become a table, & the little stools behind front seats become opposing seats for the table. Surely in that case a cooker or microwave + any size of "storage facilities" fulfill the requirements?

-We'll be bandying this about for a while, eh?

The problem we have all got is that due to much p155 taking on behalf of dealers re the camper SVA exemption rules, the DVLA have a much stricter interprestation of their original rules (unchanged as far as I am aware).
It is wholey unsatisfactory as to the regional interpretation of the rules, but unless you have a deep machoistic streak and equally deep pockets, I wouldnt fancy a legal arguement with them despite the fact you should win.
According to my contacts they are instructed to look at the van and decide whether you could live in the van self sufficient for a few days (ie washing and cooking / sleeping / eating) and whether or not it looks like it could be changed back to standard without much hassle.

As your Bongo is over ten years old, and you are presumably paying £185/yr, it will not make any difference changing it to motor caravan on your V55.

Having only seen pictures of your conversion, I really don't know whether your van would meet the VOSA requirements as a motor caravan or not. Have a look here:

I'm puzzled..

Cheaper than what? If yours is based on CO2 it can't be cheaper, if it's simply the pre-2001 engine size basis it's £185.

Where does cheaper come into it?

Nobody's VED is cheaper for a Bongo. It may however be less than you (wrongly) thought.
