Poland. (What Bongo's did next)

Hi, we've all got our versions of what happened on the way to Poland and meeting up with the Russians, but what about the journey home? How did you all fare? To start the ball rolling this is what we did.

Day 1 travelled back to Sceczin where we saw Bob and Lin come rolling in with the exhaust not where it should be - it was lying in the back of the bongo rather than underneath, thanks to the dodgy Polish roads. Also Paul and Lol, who kindly lent us their camping stove - again. We've love to know what happened next Bob - did the Germans sort it?

Germany next - camp site in Malge near Berlin, on a lake (not in). Overlooking a caravan with 2 wicker men on deckchairs sat ourside. They went in at night though.

Next on the Enschede, just inside the Dutch border. Great camp site, highly recommended for anyone with youngish kids, and a lovely town. Only other couple in the field with us were Brits with a VW camper. Stayed there for 2 days and went to a great camping shop 1.5k up the road. We finally got camping gas - and a table, and a lantern! Hot meal at last, and a cooked breakfast. No more Ray Mears bush tucker challenge for us

Then onto south Holland, near the Belgium border. Rejected the town which was full of takeaways and sex shops and found a nearish camp site. Looked promising, bar, restaurant, etc. Went for a quiet drink in the bar where the pub entertainment consisted of a local junior am dram society performing a Dutch rendition of the Little Mermaid. They pushed the pool table aside for this extravaganza and the pub was packed with pushy mothers and reluctant Dads.

Packed up a wet tent the next morning and on to Dunkirk. Spotted Gillian and Robert en route. Saw a VW Beetle rally at the port, heading from Belgium to the UK.

Ferry crossing good and now back in Blighty. Tent nearly dry

So come on, how did you eat yours?

Sunday;Tamowa to Scezczin.Took the cross country route,we expected a bumpy ride but to our surprise it was miles of dead flat tarmac.Met Bob & Lin and Jamie & Sandy(thanks for the great gas to beer exchange rate mate).Monday;Hannover.Arrived at the campsite at 22.02 only to be told by the Kamp Kommandant last check in was 22.00.We appealled to his better nature and he finally let us in.It was probably the first time that Brits had considered tunneling INTO a a German camp.Tuesday; We walked into the quaint village of Arnum where we found a bakery a small shop and the usual 20 or so bars ,I'm sure the Europeans live on peanuts and pork scratchings! We then ditched David(the Duracell Bunny)at the airport to continue his journey home.Wednesday;Onwards to Ostend, where that evening we were battered by the mother of all thunderstorms.Thursday;Of to a hotel near Dunkirk docks to dry out.Friday;Lunchtime crossing to old Blighty. We spent most of Saturday and Sunday checking the Forum for pics and tales and reflecting on a fantastic holiday.

No problem Paul, we appreciated your loan of the gas!
We normally carry some US Dollars just in case, & we didn't think we could get the pig through immigration!!
I thought you might have traded David in for a tank of fuel...?

Been feeling guilty haven’t added anything! Thanks to Jaylee for starting this.

On the Sunday in Tomowa by early afternoon when we came back from our walk there were only five Bongos left. Keith, Sher and Amelia, Grahame and Val, Gilliam and Robert and their two and Simon and Coralle.

Keith and Simon had gone to World’s End and Hell with the boss but whilst they were away there was an horrific storm so much so that their terraced pitch stated to slip down the hill. Whilst it was raining we at the top took shelter in the half finished building. On return to Tamowa Keith and Simon decided to move to the bottom of the hill.

We were ready to leave by 8.00am on the Monday and having said our farewells proceeded to the Marina over what everyone will remember is probably the worst piece of motorway in a developed country – rather like the wash board use by Lonnie Donnagan in his skiffle group.

As we were having supper at the marina Grahame and Val turned up and then went shopping. We managed to have a few words that night and the following morning. Then we went on to Plotsky which we missed having come to the Marina via Trelloborg and Rostock.

We spent two night at Plotsky and cycled around before moving on to Holland for one night and then catching the Hook of Holland ferry arriving home at about midnight on the Friday. All in all we covered about 2,800 miles averaging just under 32mpg, which we thought not bad till we heard what paulnol had achieved.

Now I’ve got a gripe about rip-off Britain.

You know that if you see something priced in Dollars or Euros you expect to pay direct pound prices. Well as we are ‘naughty’ and both smoke, drink and eat meat we were shocked by the difference in price between commodities in Germany and UK. For example we paid EURO 5.99(£4.80) for three litres on wine in Lidl and find the same in UK is £13.99 and their whisky, not the best but quite drinkable is EURO 6.99 (£5.60) in Germany and £8.19 in UK.

There we are!
