rev counter problem

my rev counter has been acting very strange lately , jumping about then dropping to zero with the hold light then coming on, a few mins later its working normally then drops again ,and then does not work at all.
this does not affect the revs of the engine or the performance.
i bought a rev counter from forum member treckie and changed it thinking it was that , NOT THAT LUCKY.it was still doing its nut.
i unclipped the wire to the sender from the engine and took the sender off, when i pulled the sender out ,some black oil came out as well, not a lot but the sender was covered in this oil.
now to the question, is there supposed to be oil around the sender unit, ? i have cleaned it and the hole where it came from then replaced it all back, it has not solved the problem, but will know more tomorrow after taking it for a good drive.

Check the mini loom from the coolant sensor to the main loom (under driver's seat, about half way along the head) - I found that was giving a bad connection on Bumbly1's

Just an update on the rev counter problems, fitted the sensor that wheelquick found for me, (yesterday) seems to be OK . gave the bongo a good run and a bit of hard revving to see if its working OK,
Looks like its all sorted rev counter behaving normally (pity about the driver) cheap fix

(not paid for it yet

Seems to be a common problem.
The part that's normally bust is the one called the "NE Sensor".

Hi,
I've got exactly the same problem I think. Does it look something like this?
As when I give it a wiggle it the rev counter jumps all over the place. I thought originally it was a dodgy cable, but it seems the sensor is at fault.
If the sensor is the one above is there any chance you could tell me what it's called and maybe a part number and perhaps where I could get one, as it's been driving me nuts and this could be the fix I need.
Thanks Steve

yes thats the bugger, sorry dont know a parts number, like i said i was given one at my local garage to fit and try.
like you said if you wiggle it about the rev counter jumps and falters, it was deffo the problem on mine. try the bongo breakers they might help .and alphabetter says it could be called the NE SENSOR.
