Bongo Fury

Let me start at the beginning...always a good place

Had my Bongo over 6 months now, it has always had a faut somewhere as perhaps 6 times it has gone into what I call limp mode. Before I have just stopped turned the ignition on and off and carried on....and then the fault light would not come on for another week or so....

Anyways, it has got to the stage now that the hold light comes on in every journey which gets rather annoying.

So as far as Iam aware it is an intermittent fault of some discription, so I have done a fault code check and it come up with 6 flashes which means Output Speed Sensor fault.

So before I go barging on with the repair I thought I would have a good look round the site, and take some advice from you guys on here.

So you know my speedo is a 110 MPH one, with the mileometer and trip still reading in KM, so I take it my speedo is not chipped, but without taking the cluster out I havnt confirmed this, but I would like your suggestions on this....ie do you think its chipped or not? (as I know these can cause a fault)

and secondly, I havnt yet but intend to clean the contacts, check the oil level in the gearbox.

I might then try and obtain a output speed sensor I know where there are three Bongos Breaking...

So am I doing all this in the correct order, or shall I just take it to the Gearbox Specialist down south....??

no your speedo is not chipped but a face plate fitted this would mean the dash clocks were probably removed to do this so a loose connection on the back may be the problem.

as this is the easiest to check and cheapest I would start there

Try changing the transmision oil any way as you dont know how old it is and there is a filter that can be cleaned in the sump,


I have not done this but there are instructions some where on the site

then yes try obtaining a new sensor if you can do the job

Thanx Rob, will do the simple checks first, see how I go... I have removed the dash, tightend all the small screws, I am looking for a 626 dash to replace mine!

Update on Bongo Hold light issue appears to be sorted, I decided not to take any chances as heard a few stories of how much these boxes can cost so got myself a second hand gearbox (£250) with a 4 months warranty and had a mate of mine fit it £100 plus £30 in oil, and the hold light so far has not come on

On removing the box my m8 siad that the oil was black and that there was not alot of life left in the box so I think I did the right thing....

Funny tho as I am after a lift top as I only have a tin top at the moment, so I doubt I will have the benifit as I want to p/x it with another van. Still who ever buys the van will know its all bin looked after....

Sounds like a gearbox oil change & filter clean may have been in order

Going to take the old gearbox apart and see if there is anything I can salvage....
