rev counter/ hold light

number 1 .bit of a mystery. (not midsummer murder sorry) . last few times starting the bongo it starts ok then coughs a few times ,bit of revs then ok. never done this in all the time Ive had the vehicle, running on pure diesel for the last couple of weeks.
number 2 . noticed the other day the hold light came on when i went for my papers (it was pxxxxg down at the time

). got back home turned the engine off , waited ,back on and the hold light stayed off.
number 3 . went to roosters yesterday ,the hold light came on (steady flash ) noticed the rev counter not working. then the rev counter started to jump about and the hold light went out.

this happened a few times going and returning home.
the revs do not alter on the bongo its just the rev counter seems to be taking turns with the hold light.
any ideas from the brilliant forum team on what the bloody hell is going on.

bad connection on the back of the dash?
other than that

sounds rather like a bad connection back of the dash, i think there are four wires that are soldered onto the panel which are for the speedo and rev counter, one of them afair is an earth.
the hold light also will come on if the scavenger fan sensor plug is loose or not a good connection, under the drivers side set into the central console high up near the rear.
if this problem only rears up when its wet then i would best guess at bad earth. the bongo certainly does have a lot of earthing blocks dotted all over it which on a vehicle this old are likely to become suspect.
hope that helps you dave.
i would say check the glowplugs dave, i know its summer

but the glowplugs stay on for a long time. mines been doing this for a while now and i just wait until i hear the relay click off before starting and its no problem, most people wait till the glowplug light goes out but thats not very long to heat everything up, any smoke with it.

will check the connections as suggested. the dials have been out two or three times so might have disturbed something. it may also explain the mason alarm making noises every so often.(not the alarm sound)
as for glow plugs i always wait until quite a few seconds after the light goes out, in fact i watch the lights go out for the roof then start the engine. it has started to be lumpy on first start so maybe time for new glow plugs. Ive had the bongo 18 months so don't know how long they were in before that.
thanks for the info guys ,as always a forum full of info and knowlege nearly 24 hours a day.

I'd guess you have two problems there. I suspect the rev counter and Hold light are one problem and the engine roughness is another. The ECU takes an engine speed signal from somewhere and the back of the rev coumter is the most likely place; we know it takes the road speed signal from there. If the connections on the back of the instrument panel are ok, I'd look for the engine speed sensor and check the continuity between it and the rev counter, not sure where it is though. Have you checked the blink code? Rough starting; glow plugs? Is it only when cold?
Jes.

yes the rough start only when cold,
as for the blink code, not checked it out ,but the blink is an even amount of time ,on/off all the time .

for the blink code you need to short 2 connections in the diagnostic box in the passenger footwell
check the fact sheet for exact instructions

Dave, was it raining the second time the hold light flashed? Sometimes there is dodgey electrical connection that manifests itself in heavy rain.

When I had hold light flashing and speedo on 0 it was a loose screw on the back of the instrument printed circuit. I found a forum item on it with pics and tightening the relevant screws cured it.

Going to have to look at it this FRIDAY, hoping to go to Tan Hill meet for the weekend.

I'm pretty sure Dave's got at least one screw loose
