DIY exhaust fitting?

Hiya folks,

We've got a SS exhaust from MIJ Performance in Walsall after a number of recommendations on here; our standard one is looking totally knackered and we're away to Italy on the 21st.

So I need to get it fitted this weekend and I was wondering if anyone else has done this themselves (the places around here are either too busy or too snotty to fit it)?

We've got the standard 2-part turbo-back single tailpipe jobbie the same as brora's.

I gather I've got to retain the "O ring" (gasket?) from the turbo/downpipe join and disconnect and bypass the cold start flap thing but I'm wondering if I need a gasket for the other join (the one between the two sections of pipe) and if so whether a suitable one will fall off from somewhere when I remove the existing OEM exhaust or if I should use instant gasket? Is it easy enough to dismount and remount from the rubbers and hangers?

I gave all the bolts a dose of WD40 a couple of days ago and will give them another one tonight so I'm hoping when I come to do the deed tomorrow it should all be straightforward but thought I'd check for any tips just in case as this is about the upper end of my DIY spannering. [-o<

Cheers,

Paul

You should find some sealing rings when you take the old exhaust to pieces, but may need to add some sealant if they are very old.

If you use instant gasket make sure it is the fireproof exhaust stuff not the coloured silicone stuff - as that won't last very long.

Thanks scanner, the stuff I picked up at lunchtime says it's suitable to replace asbestos gaskets and will withstand 260C but I guess that EGT can get higher than that?

Pass on that, but I'd have thought if it is to replace asbestos gaskets it would do.

The stuff I use is the Holt's Exhaust stuff I think it's called Gun Gum or Firegum or something.

One of those anyway.

See under "Repair" in here

Good for up to 1000 degrees.

scanner - thanks, I got some of the firegum stuff to be on the safe side (3.99 vs redoing the job, no competition)

steve - £275 inc. delivery

however, got out there today and had a go using socket set + extender bar and all I succeeded in doing was rounding the nut off  [-X (told you I was crap with spanners)

I'm going to get onto the guy who fitted after-market discs to my nissan for me

The last thing you want to do is round your nuts off. [-X
