Wonder how it will be affected by cooking oil use as this reduces the emissions readout significantly.

Not necessarily it isn't - if your CO2 level isn't shown in your V5 your's isn't.

That system applies to post 2001 vehicles and "N" reg Bongo is pre 2001

Mine is an "R" reg and doesn't have a CO2 level recorded.

I think 100% SVO CO2 is about even but the key thing is that the carbon cycle is a couple of years (renewable/sustainable) rather than millions of years (dead end). With biodiesel it's not quite so good due to the methanol involved in production.

As far as other emissions are concerned: no sulphur, much lower HC, lower CO, slightly higher NOx.

I'm using standard, and waste ( when I can get good stuff) Veg oil for a good while now, and If I remember right, when I got my MOT done last Feburary, the reading was 0.99ppm (?) and your allowed 3.5ppm. The examiner could not believe how low the result was.


None of the oil I use has methanol involved in it's production, at least I hope they don't use it in SVO.

My Bongo passed it's test today - it's reading was 1.94 1/m with a limit of 3.

It has approx 30% pura veg oil in the tank and was serviced 5.5k miles ago. Seems a little quieter with 5/30 fully synthetic (£15 /5l) added during the service today; purchased from a local store stocking oil from AC Delco oils along side the comma oil that was more expensive for semi-synthetic. I nearly choked when the grease monkey said that he had poured 3 litres of unused oil away because he did not think that I wanted to take it away with me. Fortunately, he filled up a spare container with some replacement oil.

I'm not familiar with that engine!

I have some figures for my 2.5 td engined bongo though..... (from last m.o.t.)

It wasn't ideal conditions for the mot really...I was running late, and i only live round the corner from the garage, so the engine was pretty much stone cold, i like to take it for a damn good thrashing before the mot usually...

Engine temp 52 degrees, 0.53 ppm, test pass. I had around a 15% ratio of veggy in at the time.

I have been using veg oil, usually about 30% and on my first MOT (pre-oil) I registered about .92 (cannot remember exact figure) but on my recent one (post-oil) it was only .62 at least a 30% reduction in emissions. I am not sure how this relates to the figures used for road tax, but as I am pre-2001 I don't suppose it matters.

The emissions check in the MOT is nothing to do with the CO2 levels

It is an "opacity" test - to check how smoky your exhaust is.

It's the poor devils with cars worth only a few hundred quid I feel sorry for, some of them will cost more to tax than their value, which will render them worthless really, a car worth around £300.00 no matter how good is hardly worth £400. tax a year is it if its emissions are high. I think Tiscali on thier home page are highlighting this problem with ten good vehicles.
