Bongo Fury

My cruise control has started playing up - initially by turning off when I applied my brake - not just disengaging but turning off. This resolved itself but recently, it stopped holding the speed selected after anything from a couple of seconds to a minute. The power light remained on and the cruise control could be reengaged by pressing the reset button but it would fail again.

Now the cruise control does not engage at all. I have run the diagnostics and it passes test A (components and connections) but not test B - which suggests that there is a problem with the wiring to the servo unit, vacuum connection or throttle linkage connection. The latter appears to be fine and I cannot detect any problem with the vacuum connections - they are on firmly.

I have used a multimeter on the power supply wires (red & black) to the servo unit - should there be 12v supplying to this unit? I did not reigster any volts along the wires and there is no apparent damage. Any advice would be welcome - I'm hoping to fix it over the week-end.

I've got mine in bits at the moment as I'm wiring up a stalk-mounted switch to replace the oval one, so can't help with the voltage question.

A few thoughts:

Try disconnecting the vacuum hose from the unit (if you can) to check there is some 'suck' there.
Check the 3 connections to the actuator - have they got wet?
I seem to recall there is a red led on the control box that flashes in time with the speedo pulse - check that is working ok, as least you'll know the speed input is working.
Isn't there a mode you can put it in so that you can increase/decrease the revs whilst stationary to check the actuator?

When I get mine back together I'll check the voltages on the 3 wires.

I have just removed the pipe from vacuum pipe and there is suction.

The 3 connectors appear fine and there is no evidence of them getting wet.

I have put the vehicle in neutral and followed the diagnostic / start up procedure but cannot get the set button to increase the revs.

I was not aware that the red light on the control box flashes in time with the speedo pulse - mine does not.

If the LED on the main unit isn't flashing you aren't getting a speed reading from the speedo, so that could be the problem.

Any suggestions on how to test for a signal from the speedo?

I can only suggest seeing if the LED flashes..........



If the speedo is working OK just try checking the connection from the blue (I think) wire on the back of the speedo to the cruise control box.

The LED light does flash when the speedo is functioning. I was being a muppet when testing the system .

However, I still do not have cruise control and wonder what to test next.

I fitted my MS50 today and after a bit of a problem getting it to engage I traced the problem to an incomplete snaplock connector (blue wire from the Waeco control unit to the blue/white speedo connection)- traced with my multimeter. I found I needed to give the connector an extra squeeze (it was the firts one I did!).As your initial problem appears to have started with the pressing of the brake pedal I wondered if these connections might need checking. I too had the Servo Vacuum diagnostics lead me to check its conections but the vacuum, wire to throttle and electrical connections all seemed fine.

I have checked all of the connections and they appear fine. I spoke to Waeco in Germany this morning and they believe that the problem is down to the servo and have asked me to test it by making the red wire live and earthing the black and white wires; if this does not adjust the throttle, I need a new servo. Good news is that parts are guaranteed for 2 years so I will not have to pay 70 Euros. The bad news is that I need to contact Waeco UK and the telephone number I have tried (01305 854000) has had no answer all morning and there have been no replies to my emails . I am trying to resist the urge to rant about the fact that I can speak to the technical staff in the German office in near perfect English but I cannot even get through to the English office in Broadmayne, Dorset in any language!!!
I'll check the servo tonight and start ranting tomorrow if I cannot get through to them.

Give me the address & I'll send "The Boys" round to sort them out I'm just amazed there actually is a uk office it's probably just an answer machine & email account that gets checked once a week by the cleaning lady

If only it was that good!

I have not even got through to an answer machine - it just keeps on ringing and one of my emails bounced back saying that the address had failed. I could understand if it was the email address of a person but [email protected]????

I'm about to try wiring the servo directly and will be speaking to Germany in the morning if required.

Edited update:

I wired the servo directly and it works. The problem appears to be the 3 plastic connectors linking the servo to the "brain" - they were tight but not tight enough and the wires had worked lose over the last year. I have crimped them and it seems to have made a difference - I have my cruise control back again .

Update:

Cruise control is working fine.

Unlike Waeco UK which seems to have disappeared; all of the emails I sent (to 4 different people) bounced back as undeliverable and there is no answer to phone calls.

If you need any advice / info, call the German office - their technical team was very helpful.

Information filed away in case it's ever needed.
