Wasnt smoking before. I was just pottering about and come across it in the fact sheets
and thought i would have a go, didnt think it would do any harm, could the cutting out be a
fuel starvation thing.

Something you took off is not seating/sealing/loose and letting air in ????

Did you note the order in which the washers went and replaced them in the same order? You maybe creating a blockage by not having the fuel inlet orifice at the correct height as a result.

If it is an air lock due to changing the filter, see daveblueozzie's answer in the link above.

This has stemmed from me cleaning the banjo filter. since putting it back together it keeps cutting out, it will tick over nicely for about two minutes, then it starts juddering a bit
then a couple of puffs of white smoke then it just stops. can anyone shed any light please.

Like has been said before - sounds like its drawing air past the banjo washers. Did you replace or anneal them?

Kevo - if memory serves, there is a washer on either side of the banjo. Did you clean all surfaces and washers? Did you drop anything during dismantling? As has been said before it all needs to be clean and tight otherwise air can get drawn in. If it starts and runs for a couple of mins I don't think you have an airlock as it will already have been purged.
