Faulty fuel gauge

Can anyone help with a fuel gauge problem? My Bongo fuel gauge read nearly full when the tank was brimmed. After using half a tank it read empty. I checked out the forum and hear this a common problem with an apparent fix (ie making sure the black wire on the tank is a good earth and even replacing the standard connector with new spade ends). I changed the connector, checked and found a good earth only to find no reading on the gauge with nearly a full tank of diesel.
I read 6.5 volts across the terminals on the sender and see the same on the back of the instrument cluster ( there is a screw terminal marked 'F-U' - no pun intended - that I have buzzed out right back to the green and yellow wire on the tank sender). Am I missing something here? Please help.

Thanks for the help everyone. The problem is fixed after reading the suggestions and earthing the black wire onto one of the small screws that holds the sender to the top of the tank. I now have that rare beast, a Bongo that can tell you how much fuel it has! Awesome!!! :D
