hi all,
after attending the bash, and being regaled for not investigating my tapping/knocking/rattling,(thanks kirsty and lionel)i`ve been in touch with the mechanic-who-knows-more-about-cars than i ever will, and he`s going to come over and we`re going to investigate.HURRAH!! i hear you all shout!!
the rocker covers will come off and whether there`s any obvious camshaft wear or not,i hope to remove or lift the camshafts and remove/dismantle/clean/replace the hydraulic lifters.i`m hoping that one or more lifters are stuck after standing for ten months before i bought it,and hopfully cleaning and freeing them off will have a dramatic effect.
my question is,where on earth can i get some phots, pics or diagrams of the v6 engine?we just want to be sure of the timing being okay when we`ve finished.what sort of timing belt tensioner is it?will it need adjusting/retightening?i know there are a few v6 owners out there now,and someone may have a pic,or even a manual.is it the same as a mazda 929 or ford probe,as far as the top end goes?
thanks
jamie

Hi there,

Do a search on here, someone put a great summary of what the engine is. It's from a Mazda 929 not a ford probe.

http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... 5tr.html#4 details some pics and part numbers.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Andy

Yep, the engine from the probe is similar, but not the same...Mazda 929 it is. Could your man not mark the pulleys, and a surrounding area before removing the old cambelt? He could soon knock up a temrorary wedge (out of an old drill bit or similar) as a wedge for the top pulley, so that there is no movement when tensioning the belt.

hi,
thanks bdc.we`ve been here before,i know, with me asking which engines are the same, but when i`ve looked at manuals on ebay for the mazda 929,they`re 1970`s-1980`s models.are these still the same engine?
thanks
jamie

That's right, the j5-d is the 2.5 v6 version (same as some 929's) Not to be confused with the 2 litre v6, whicj is the RF-V engine.

If you search for mazda 929 specs you have a long haul ahead of you, because the car was introduced in 1983! It was popular in the american market, but the 3.0 litre v6 was the favoured option.

The first 929 had a rotary (wankel) engine, that one can be ruled out straight off.

The 2.5 litre v6 J5-D,is a dohc engine with 160 BHP?

Hi Jamie,
Me again,if you release the tension on the cam belt do not re-use it !!
You will have to buy a new one.
Releasing and re-tensioning is not advisable on a used belt, it will fail !!
