Bongo Fury

Dear anyone with advice.
After coming back from a week driving around Dartmoor i had the Charge and Sediment warning light clearly on. Had it checked out by garage who said they couldn't see anything wrong and the car worked fine, untill last night when i wouldn't start. Garage are saying it's the alternator after they checked fuel filter etc. I feel a little uneasy as the alternator is expensive diving in straight away. Has anyone else come across this and it was something simple (im just kidding myself now). And what should i expect the bill to look like if it is?

Yup it's the alternator, me too, easy job though, took me less than half an hour to swap them, any one could do it, just remember to disconnect the battery before staring working on it Check/change the belts while you're at it & don't overtighten them when you're refitting.

Do you have a split charge relay? Dependant on how it is wired, it can cause both lights to glow dimly, but if there was a fault on the relay it could cause them to glow brightly as well as connect both batteries in series which could result in them both going flat.

However, I think the duff alternator diagnosis (or both drive belts snapped) is the most likely.

Hi, I had the same fault recently. purchased a new alternator from Ebay. £125 including postage. fitted in 20 minutes. really easy to do, i wouldnt want to pay over the odds to get someone to do it for you. Type "Bongo Alternator" in ebay you will see it.

99% of the time the charge & sediment at the same time shows a shot alternator.

Mine went on christmas day.

Although many on here have had success with ebay replacements, I did not.

My new one lasted four days before the back bearing collapsed. (Long story, not fixed, still got it in the shed if you fancy trying to find a bearing for it)

Just be a little wary if you go down that route - get a few hundred miles in before leaving feedback etc.

I've got an alternator, with a front bearing fault.
