Bongo Fury

Does anyone know (and Im sure you do) why I am getting a white powdery stuff forming around my liesure battery. It seems to be corrosive. And more importantly how I can stop it.

Pour some hot water over each terminal - but not both at the same time.

Remove each terminal - clean them and the battery posts - apply some vaseline - and reconnect.
A liberal amount of vaseline around the connections should prevent this happening again.

The white stuff is actually forming around the tray on the bodywork, even on the inside of the wing. Are you saying that this is caused by dirty terminals.

Hi Harpo, your last post throws a different light onto the problem,it suggest to me that the battery is leaking,dry terminals can be subject to the white powdery deposits you describe, with lead acid batteries,the white powder is actually lead oxide deposits,due to the antimony in the lead plates of the battery, a solution of warm water and baking powder will clean and neutralize the terminals (rinsed with clean warm water),the best way to treat the terminals would be to coat them with copper grease, (a good protective conductor), the presence of white powder around the actual battery does suggest to me that there is a leak present though...

Bigdaddy is right....battery fluid.
An interesting point on batteries is that they often seem to accumulate (pun intended) grunge over the top...often bits of dirt, fluff, etc. Be sure to clean the top as part of your routine maintenance, as it can allow a small current to track between the terminals, and reduce the charge in a battery over a period. Mine gets absolutely filthy over here with dust, and the whole underbonnet needs a steam clean!!!!

Yep, i'd go along with that, even if nothing else under the bonnet gets cleaned, it's important that the battery is clean and the terminals protected.
