Hi all,
Does anyone know how to test the thermo sensor switch for the scavenger fan
I know the fan works because I disconnected the plug from the switch and the fan started (and also the Glowplug light came on - presumably a fault diagnostic) But I've never seen or heard the fan running "in anger".
I'm thinking of putting the sensor switch into a cup of hot water to test it, but how hot

Sorry if this has been dicussed before - I did a search, but couldn't find anything specific.

Not sure I'd immerse it in water. Dry heat might be safer

I still think an over-ride circuit, properly installed, is a good option. But not having had mine in service for long, I can't give 100% type tested approval yet. But as much as I've used it, it has behaved just great and the hot handbrake test seems to confirm it isn't, when the fan has been used on a run.

Our fan works o.k. but I have yet to hear it running when out driving-Handrake stays cool

I've only heard mine once - and that was after I had left Bongo after a longish run and then returned to get something I had left in the back - it was running then but not when I stopped.

I think it is only really used to cool the engine & bay after a run - not during a run, the air flow from the front of the van should be enough to keep things cool. Although when you come up to lights etc. on a hot day I suppose it could come on.

I'll check up what temperature it is supposed to come on at tomorrow.

The workshop manual shows how to test it, but my copy is not accessible until tomorrow. I post the info tomorrow evening.

Here we go:

INSPECTION:

"1. Remove the engine bay temperature sensor
2. Set the engine bay temperature sensor as shown in the diagram" (picture shows the lower half of the sensor submerged in a container of water over a heat source - basically a saucepan over a flame. A multimeter set to a low resistance range is connected across the terminals). "Use a tester to measure the resistance value of the engine bay sensor while increasing the water temperature gradually

Water Temp Resistance value (k ohm)
20C 2.0 - 2.9
80C 0.27 - 0.37

3. If the resistance value is non-standard, replace engine bay sensor"
