Hi
I have this problem. My local garage pointed out the following:
1. No "E" marks on my tyres. Are the tyres legal ???
2. Is my insurance valid ???
3. Is my MOT valid,if not,why was it issued ???
4. In the case of a RTA would any claim be valid ???
5. Could i make a claim against the MOT station for issuing a MOT cert:
6. Upon buying PROPER tyres who could i present the bill to.
7. The garage who sold me the bongo,or the MOT station.
Any input would be a great help

Hi Dolly,

The way i see it, you have a valid MOT. the tyres would have passed with the legal requirement of tread & condition, at the time of MOT issue.
Therefore your insurance is valid.
Unless yer tax is out, technically you're legal. (unless the MOT certificate is a fake). #-o

Now with regards to the E mark, i did read somewhere tyres are not accepted in Europe without the E.

If you were to get stopped going about you're daily business i don't think you would have any problem.
It's all on a database these days & you would basically only get stopped over this issue if you were out of date. (& even then, as long as you tires are in good shape wouldn't enter into the equation).

Having said that.. anything other than a prang & private exchange of details involving a diligent Road Traffic Officer & insurance representative could get silly...

Someone else might know better.

I would phone the people you bought the vehicle from & test their after sales service.

I might get blown out of the water on this one, so i will also ad ignorance of the law is not an excuse... & i will also stress this is just my opinion on the matter.. :P

If you really are worried, try Bathwick tyres on the Lower Bristol Road.. They ordered a tyre fer me & got it in an hour at a competitive price. (Make sure they know the sizes front & back if you have the original steel wheels.. I've still got mine).

Hope this makes sense? :D

This appears to be the last word on the matter.

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2003/20031316.htm

Just reading it quickly it seems to relates only to the "supply for fitting" of tyres within the EU.

As yours were presumably originally "supplied and fitted" outside the EU you may be in the clear until you need to replace them.

This also explains it.

When tested for the SVA if no E mark, they are OK as long as there is a 'Japanese Industrial Standard' mark, which is basically their equivalent.
It is a small circle with a diagonal JIS inside it - hope this helps. PS check your load ratings.
