Speedo and oil pressure lamp

Hi All
I managed to get hold of a 626 Mazda speedo unit (wanted mph instead of kph) popped the whole unit in switched ignition on.....big smell of burning!! switched off and removed unit. Part of the circuit on the rear had burned out. Replaced unit with original but now the oil pressure light and speedo don't work. Have checked all the fuses and small bulbs ...all ok. Any suggestions please??

Bosun,
you do not replace the whole unit only the speedo it self. They are wired different at the back for different things.
Hope this helps;

check the fuses for the light and speedo

Thanks for that Max but I've checked all the fuses and bulbs in cab and engine bay... all ok
Are there any others I may have missed?

It sounds like a connection has burned through the insulation somewhere, and could possibly be a touching cable strand? You think that'd pop the fuse, but obviously not in your case....
I'd suggest starting from scratch with the speedo (contact a member that has done the conversion...waycar8?) Make all the required alterations to the wiring (if any),then take it from there and see what happens? Re-tracing your steps may yield a result....Not very helpful i know...

your best bet is to pm clogger, he did the exact same as you so he will probably be able to advise better.

Do you think there should be a fact sheet for this conversion but then again what happens if they are not payed up members?

I'd have thought it a very "factsheetable" topic max.... (did i invent a word again?)

hi peeps
just come back from a little jaunt of 3 weeks
to the netherlands/germany/poland/ukraine and back
bongo did`nt miss a beat worst thing blown headlight bulb
re swapping the whole unit now i did this on porpoise or is it purpose to see what would happen
if i remember rightly nothing worked apart from the hazards and indicators for a few seconds
then blew some fuses,
so it seems lucky that the fuses did blow or i may have had some singed wires on me hands
so when i put the original unit with 626 unit installed it worked fine.
i would be getting the multimeter out about now and trying for connectivity in the wiring loom as a start now the fuses seem to be ok.
ps for you lot about to leg it to poland
diesel is about 4.3 ish pln per litre (and exchange is about 4.25 pln to the squid which is crap)
border control is gone so you can drive right thru , but you must drive with your headlights on in
poland has been that way for a year or 2 now.
germany diesel is about 1.3/1.4 euro a litre

Wow clogger, that sounds like some adventure. Makes me think BF should have a Travelogue section where amazing journeys can be written up, with pics, for the pleasure and edification of all. I used to do this for gliding magazines and the real benefit was I wrote up stuff I'd otherwise not have bothered to. Years later, I can re-read my exploits and relive the great memories of what I once did. Without the incentive, I'd not have bothered.

only other thing i would mention is
just be aware if you go anywhere where theres crowds of people
pick pockets are rife , or more to the point
pocket slashers
just take what you need with you and keep it as close to you as possible
they tend to like baggy type combat trouser affairs easy to slash the side pockets.
as i found out to my cost and i thought i was savvy about it,
luckily all they got was some headache tablets, as i know what it`s like , so kept all me stuff not needed elsewhere,
what peed me off most was it was a new pair of strides, and had to do my best seamstress impression to sew em back up (with added mousetraps installed for next time

)
don`t be paranoid about it , just careful
your on ya hols so can be a bit lax on these things and thats what they are relying on
