correct grade of gearbox oil and capacity for petrol v6?

hi all,
following on from my other post about checking the gearbox oil etc,i have once more checked it,several times to get an`average`engine running and in `drive`and once again,it was off the bottom of the dipstick.i will now purchase some gearbox oil and top it up.i thought about replacing it,but it looks ok,quite clear.does anyone know the correct grade of gearbox oil for the 2.5 v6 petrol, and what is the capacity.also,is there an option as with engine oils,to select a different grade, for instance,if the gearbox is slightly noisy, would a thicker oil quiten it down marginally?at present,i have no way of knowing if it`s noisy at all,as it`s so underfilled that i won`t know until i fill it properly.
i hope that makes sense
thanks
jamie

Hi jamie, noisy gearbox !!! you got a manual then ???, If you have an auto the oil should be red in colour. As for grade i just got some ATF from halfrauds, dont recall any grade spec:

If it's the same box as the diesel, you need 4 litres of Dexron 3 (or equivalent) - pricier than other grades, but I paid £19.99 for 5 litres from my local accessory shop whereas Halfords wanted £22.99.

That's interesting Keith :? - mine only took 4 litres and I had no problems going to and from the Southern Softies meet. Perhaps I'd better check my level again. Mind you, I did cheat and used a Pela Pump, but the fluid is still a nice clear red.

Hmmm, I'll have another look at the fluid. If I still had 2 litres of old stuff left, it will be less than clear again now :(
