Correct tyre size

Hi, I've got to get a new set of tyres, and yes they are a different size on the back. Rear has 215/65 R15, front 195/70 R15. I presume that they should be like this, but one or two tyre places I've phoned think that they all should be 195/70's. Does anyone have the definitive answer to this?

Cheers
Neil

The manufacturer's standard is as you have listed - different size on the front and back. The reason for the 195s on the front is to reduce understeer (think I got that right) whilst roughly maintaining the same rolling circumference all round. This is especially important for a 4WD to avoid damage to the diff. Many owners have gone for the same size tyre all round (including me) with no adverse affect on handling. If you do go for this option, go for the higher tyre size ie the 215/65 not the 195.

All is explained more eloquently in other threads if you do a search or in the factsheet in the members area.

They should NOT be 195 on the rear, as 195's may not have a high enough load index, they are often only 92 and on the rear you must have 96 at least.

If they doubt you show them the plate on the pillar inside the driver's door the correct sizes are shown on that.

Thanks for the replies. Pretty much as I thought, I'll stick to what it has already!
