Loss of power (accompanied by a nasty screeching noise)

Hi there, a newbie here after a bit of advice.
We brought our Bongo a couple of months ago and up until yesterday it was running like a dream (by the way it is a P reg, 4WD, Diesel auto). We were driving home to Nottingham from South Wales and pulled into services to have a break and fill up. Prior to this it had been happily cruising along at 70 mph with no problems. When we pulled back onto the motorway there was a loud screeching noise and we lost power, we could not get above 50 mph. If we tried going faster the revs shot up to over 3000 and the screeching started again. Managed to get it to drive ok at just under 50 mph but as soon as hit an incline the speed would drop to below 40 mph and the tortured animal noise started again. Bit scary with trucks racing up our backside!! Continued the 30 or so miles to the next services and called out Autonational rescue.
The mechanic who's boss owns a Bongo thought that it could well be the Turbo, when I revved the engine for him the Screeching would start. All pipes into the turbo were connected ok. Rather than risk the remaining 35 miles he got us trucked home.
Does this sound like a bit of a disaster? We are hoping that the Turbo does not need replacing. Hopefully our garage will be able to have a look for us in the next couple of days. Any advice would be much appreciated.
