Hi Jamie, castrol gtx 10w-40 is what i use in my v6.In fact castrol have such a wide range to choose from,i feel sure they have an oil for you.Personally i would not choose a semi-synthetic oil, unless your engine is tuned and working at max revs for a long time.Save your money.Regards Lionel

Hi Jamie it recommends 10w-30 in the owners manual for the V6, Iam still getting a rattle from mine for the first few minutes then it quietens down, going to leave it at a garage next week so he can start it from cold to see what it is and get it sorted under warranty as i have a month left.

The grade won't really fix a worn part. Just get the cam covers off and put yourself and us out of our misery!

Hi,
I'd use a 10w30 oil, best I found by accident was the genuine toyota oil, it's well priced and of good quality.
How bad is the noise btw? Does it happen all the time or just when the engine is cold.

hi,
i`m not trying to hide or fix anything, just put the best oil in for my engine in the condition it`s in at the moment.it does quieten down when running, marginally,so i guess i`d need an oil that reaches the hydraulic tappets as soon as possible after starting the engine.
thanks

"in - cheek - tongue" Jamie

Get the best you can afford - a lower first number will refresh the parts quicker (sounds like a certain beer ad)

my tongue`s nowhere near anyone`s cheeks,so i can`t comment on that, but i certainly will get some decent stuff to bung in next time i do a flush/change etc.
thanks

Did anyone catch 21st Century Girl's Guide to Sex on 5 tonight - plenty of that malarky on there

hi all,
after a second oil flush and filter change, then cheap lidl oil,the rattle seems almost as bad as it was initially.this is after i had it almost silent using castrol oil the time before.should i try again with good quality oil, before i bite the bullet and take it to the garage to have the camshaft/tappets looked at?
thanks

on further inspection/listening to the sound of the engine, and i can definitely hear a tick-tick-tick echoing off the ground.this is either the tappets as previously thought,or could it perhaps be the gearbox?i`ve never changed the atf.the level is ok,but it`s quite brown, and takes ages to change to `top`gear.can the gearbox be noisy when needing an oil change/filter clean?
thanks

Should be a clear red - my gearchange became loads better after changing the ATF. You need the equivalent of Dexron 3 fluid.

hi john,
might the gearbox be noisy if it badly needs an oil change?
thanks

No idea, but I can't see why it should be.

Noise on startup happens as they pump up. When I was Competing my Rover V8 engined kit car GTX wasn't the best, Valvoline worked best. But as you have been told if they are loud when running sort them. The noise is created as the cam runs up the ramp and hits the lifter hard. Camshafts dont last long in that environment.
