Bongo Fury

Popped to the shops 1st thing yesterday morning. all was well.

An hour later went out again. Turned key, watched glowpug light go out, waited the regulation extra 10 seconds (must get new glowplugs soon!) at which point the radio normally kicks in.

It did not.

Fired up Bongo. Pulled removable front panel off the Kenwood. Little red light pulsing away as normal in the main unit. Obviously there was power getting to it so thought "Bugger. New stereo required."

Bought another this morning. Same make, similar model to make fitting as pain free as poss, stuck it & surprise surprise - Nothing. Not a glimmer of life at all.


Looked at the bank of fuses in the box by the right knee & started popping them out to see if that could be the culprit & . . . . Bingo!

Top line, far left blue 15amp had blown. 35 pence later all is well so now have 2 Kenwoods.

Theres a moral to this story somewhere. . . .

When I was at college studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering, we would lose marks if the first thing written on a fault-finding report wasn't 'Checked Power Supply'

However, I'm not being smug - we've all been-there-done-that when it comes to simple mistakes

There was me thinking that the little blinking red light was telling me power was getting to the unit.

Lectrickery can be quite baffling!

The led must be part of the permanent live circuit,whereas the 15 amp fuse could be the ignition "switched live" feed. If that fuse had blown, its the same principle as having the ignition switched off....

Well my front right hand speaker has stopped working, checked wiring loom in door today, wiggled wires a little speaker worked for a second, then nothing, How do you remove the door panel to get to the wires at rear of speaker please, worried that I might upset the mirror and window wiring

there is a screw in the door pull ,one in the door open catch, then there are 2 screws either side (i think )take the window switch out and unplug it then pull the door card from the bottom to release the poppers, then slightly push up to unclip from the window sill then slightly twist to be able to get the door catch out.
then your problem starts as to whats wrong with the speaker or wiring.

Having got the panel off you may have to peel back the protective polythene to get at things. It is held in place with horrible black goo, but its not as bad as it looks to tackle. The trick I found was to have a sharp kitchen knife and as you start to peel back the polythene, use a sawing action on the black goo, which will now be starting to stretch. This allows it to ping back more or less where it came from so that later, when you want to press the polythen back in place, you still have a bead of it and not horrible big lumps.

MM - can't you just take it back and get a refund (or at least credit?). Say it turns out it won't work with you car, which is an unusual Japanese import, because the thruxgrommet oscillator doesn't match the FM sine wave generator.

Could take it back but the new one's nice & black. The old one being silver & just didn't match anyway.

Another of lifes learning curves, I'll find a good home for it one way or another.

... and then someone else gets the old radio . Not good.

Well removed panel and checked speaker all looked fine, had another look at wire loom near door hinge, eventually found a broken cable, soldered a new section in and then spent an age getting the door panel back in situ Eventually I got it back Well now have all speakers working again, Thanks for the advice guys
