Bongo Fury

Problem No1:- is a rattly ticking noise when cold more of a heavy knocking noise when the seats are lifted, had a screw driver as a listening aid and i think it is coming from the mid to upper front of the engine it increases when revved but after about two miles it stops
Problem No2:- after kick down (usually overtaking) there is a strong smell of burning rubber/clutch, the belts i can see look OK could it be the cam belt which was changed pre sale last month
Problem No3:- on checking the spark plugs the two rear ones left and right were covered in oil the bore down to the plugs was also covered in oil along with the HT lead and about 1/4" deep sat around the plugs

I don't know what the problem is offhand, but you can bet they are all related... Let me have a think....

No 1 point sounds like a sticking valve lifter..It happens...comes and goes.
Reguarding the oily mess. Clean everything up really well and also the 2 plugs and see how it goes..The oil on the HT leads is probably causing them to short out and the plugs will missfire and oil up.
You may find doing this cures No 1 point. Co's when cold the engine is working a bit harder and is more likley to short out/misfire

Sounds like the rocker cover is leaking oil..try tightening any loose bolts (not too much) or fit a new gasket

Not the cam belt smelling co's it is toothed and cannot slip. Could be Alternator belt but you would expect to hear it. Clutch???

Well...there you go....Know nothing about petrol Bongo's but do Know a bit about ignition systems in general and the effect of getting them oiley.

Ive cleaned as much of the oil I can started it up and it smoked for a few seconds as some oil had run into the bore but still sounds the same. The reference to "clutch" was its a similar smell to a burning clutch mixed in with the aroma of hot rubber.

Reckon you have a sticking valve lifter. Not a big deal..just annoying.

i am a new owner of a v6,and i have had similar problems to you.i bought my v6 as a trade clearance`sold as seen`for only £2,000,but i was taking a huge risk,as it was unregistered and the engine sounded very tappetty.i knew that they had hydraulic tappets and were therefore not adjustable.from what i`d read,it can be remedied by an engine flush,and oil and filter change.i did this,and it did make it better,but it does still sound rattly.i also had a lot of oil around 3 of my spark plug leads,where it was filling with oil at the bottom of the plug bores.i thought that this must be something serious,but i think it`s a slight leak from the rocker cover.i cleaned this out when i checked the plugs a week ago and up til now,there`s only a minute amount returned.
as for the rubber/burning smell,i haven`t had that,but i have had an oily smell,like burning oil.this may be due to the fact that i mistook the gearbox oil dipstick,for the engine oil one, and ended up overfilling the engine oil by2 or 3 litres!i`ve since drained some out and had no further problems with the oil.
i`d love to hear your experiences,as there aren`t many of these v6`s about.

Hi Jamie did the oil appear before or after you over filled? It had an oil change when i bought it last month and Ive added some of the stuff that frees up sticking tappets but not done many miles yet to see if it works.

i only noticed the oil in the plug holes after i overfilled it,so yes,it could be that.i too added some stuff to free the hydraulic tappets(wynn`s hydraulic lifter treatment)but only done about 50 miles since,so i have no idea how long it takes to show an improvement.does your v6 have to be gouing quite fast before it changes to `top`gear?i have to be going about 50-55mph.it will do 100mph,only done it once,but i at least know it`s running reasonably well.i have no oil leaks now,just the noisy tappets.i did the screwdriver listening thing around each plg,to see if a particluar cylinder had noisy tappets.it did seem to be noisier on one side,towards the front,so maybe i need new lifters there.i have no idea what i have to remove to inspect them,apart from taking the rocker cover of.
where abouts are you?

I'm sure i read that Apole had a simaler leak of oil from his rocker cover which fills around the plugs and causes a problem, not the first time iv'e heard it a bit of a common prob by all acounts. Are you sure the ticking noise isn't just an injector as they do tick



Hogman you only had a 100 from yours it goes of the clock as i found out the other week but watch your fuel gauge

My first thoughts were tappets or injectors, it was only when i lifted the seats and started the engine that it sounded more like a metallic knocking rather than ticking, but after a few miles it quietens down to a normal engine noise when hot i sometimes think its stalled its that quite.

Have you checked the oil level manners? Too much oil can be as bad as too little ya know?
