Gearbox Vibration

Hi i Was Just Wondering If Anyone Could Help .
I Have A 2.5 Diesel (1997) When It's Put In Gear It Starts To Vibrate Quite Badly, But When It's In Neutral The Vibrating Stops.
TickOver Is About 750,800 RPM

wow tickovers high 750000.
if its 750 its about spot on. does the vibration dissapate when your driving and is it the whole bongo thats vibrating. it has got to be something with the gearbox, loose mounting but im sorry im not that clued up with that department.hopefully someone else will help.

As dreamwarrior says, you have to suspect mountings, and it should not be expensive to get a mechanic (ideally a Bongo specialist - there's a good one in South Croydon recommended on here) to put it on a ramp and check to see if that is the problem. You can then investigate parts and cost to fix, or else eliminate it. He/she may also give a view on what, if anything is unusual in vibration terms and if it is a cause or result of loose/worn mountings. You may have a 'resonance' problem. For example, if your exhaust mounts have come loose you might not get a vibration unless you put the car in gear when it is restrained by the brake, engine revs then drop a little, general vibration increases a little (mine does, I think all cars do) but the exhaust, because it is not fully secured, starts to waggle around in sympathy and sets up a new source of vibration / noise. But if there is anything like this going on, a mechanic ought to spot it. Alternatively if you have a mate and some ramps you could inspect it yourself - but think very carefully about safety aspects if putting a Bongo in gear with you underneath it. Have a mate with his foot on the footbrake and (in my view) chock the wheels.

I vaguely remember someone a few months ago having problems with a gearbox mounting - possibly on the top? But to be honest, yours sounds like a problem in the gearbox, have you checked the fluid level with the dipstick under the drivers seat - engine running, handbrake on, brake on & go through the gears then check the level. May need the fluid changing & filter cleaning. Beyond that it may be a gearbox specialist job I'm afraid

But but but, eliminate the cheap stuff before starting to fret about the expensive stuff. You may get lucky (and as Kirsty says, even if its the gearbox it may respond to to a fluid change and filter clean - read up on this and the need for absolute cleanliness before tacking it, though not that hard I believe)

May be worth giving the guys at Dunnings Automatics in Weymouth a ring 01305 783113, they may be able to give you an idea of the problem on the phone, tell them Bongo Fury sent ya :wink:
