rust spots

We have a white bongo and there are a few random rust spots coming on the area between the top of the windscreen and the lid. I have used touch up before but it can look a bit obvious. Any tips for stopping it spreading and making it good. Thanks

I have the same problem. I imagine some wise bongolier will come up with a suitable solution :P

rub it down treat it with rust killer, then respray :?

Sometimes you can make a feature out of these things by deciding to treat rub down and treat the area properly then mask it off to a design and respray it in a suitable contrasting colour. I'm probably going to do this for a dent in the bottom of my tailgate. I fill it then spray the bottom of the tailgate silent silver to match the bumper. I've seen this done before and it looks good.

Get to work on the PC with Photoshop on a photo of your Bongo :lol:

Just make sure that you get to the root of the rust - well as much as is possible . A light sanding is not enough. Us e a high quality rust killer/inhibiter . In this case you have no option but to treat it in situ. For removable ,small, items I favour bead blasting ( heavy steel parts like towbars ,can be sandblasted )

Blimey Mike, you have given me an idea there, I have a dent in mine as well, never thought of spraying it the same colour as the Bumper sounds 8)

I had loads of chips/rust spots in this area. I got a small dremel and a grinding bit.....ground ALL the rust at every spot (about 40) back to bare metal and in about 4 places right through till there was a small hole.....treated every bit with rust preventer.....filled the holes and deep bits with plastic metal.......car body filler on the rest......rubbed down till pretty flat........about 6 coats of halfords filler/primer (yellow).....loads of rubbing down with fine emery.........then a coat of grey primer......finally a cost of spray from bongo towers (good stuff) and a coat of laquar from the same source.........Let it dry for a few days then fine rubbing compound and a good polish........that was 9 months ago and so far so good and unless you know it's been done you would not spot it.

Really useful and sensible advice there Haydn. I'm amazed you managed to blend in new with old like that. Anyway, loads of tips all round and our man should now be able to tackle the job with some optimism :lol:

Whilst on the rust subject, does anyone have any recommendations on treating the rust, specifically what gel/fluid to put on the bare metal. I've tried Ku-Rust which supposedly turns the rust into something harmless. I used it on a few spots on the sills after sanding the worst of it off. Then used a Halfords anti-rust primer, but after a few months the paint has started to turn brown & bubble.

I've now just bought a spot blaster from Aldi (£9.99 - bargain!) & will make a start on a few spots on the rear wheelarches. However, I'd hate to spend hours on the preparation, only to find that it comes thru after 6 months. Is there some "wonder cure" out there?

In my reply above ....the spots above the windscreen....They are caused by flying stones etc....this means the rust is coming from the front of the metal.
Where wheel arches are concerned ....rust almost always eats through from the inside.....you can try all the so called rust killers in the world and spend houre doing a good "repair"....after a few months the rust bubbles will reappear worse than before.......in my experience the only way to get rid of it is to generously cut the affected bits out and have new metal welded in....then ..prep and paint. This can be quite expensive but if you get the cutting and welding done professionally then the finishing/painting should be within most peeps abilities. The proffessionals would want to spray whole panels but a good areosol around the wheel arches can look pretty good to most peeps. The paint Ian sells is very good.

Products such as jenolite/kurust have their place with such repairs,i recall repairing a heavily stone chipped front valance on my sister's old cavalier, i used a rust inhibitor gel (can't remember which one)on the rusty chips (after grinding out the worst of the rust),after a full re-spray of the valance, the repair was 100% intact 5 years or so later...

Like Haydn says, it depends where the rust has eminated from...If from the back,all the oxidization will need to be ground/cut out,or it will return.
