Got it started, BUT!

Well, I've checked the timing once more, and it was a little out, and it now starts, but won't rev up at all, and blows out a lot of un burnt fuel., and no matter what I do there always fuel leaking from around the base of the injectors, the copper washers are there, and I've tightened them up as directed. I'm at a total loss. Hope some one can come up with the answer, as I'm open to any suggestions. Tom Greshon

Very odd. It starts but won't rev and plenty of unburnt fuel? That would infer the timing is still out as the compression cycle appears to be out of sync. But the fact that it starts? Hmm. Have the fuel pump settings been altered at any point?
As for leaking around the injectors, it looks like cracking open the injectors has upset the sealing effectiveness of the copper washers. Looks like replacement washers I'm afraid.

Does Ian stock the washers?

How much would the timing have to be out to affect it revving up, it looked spot on to me. I would say the way it's performing that it sounds like timing, would one tooth cause the problem?

I haven't touched anything on the fuel pump.

yes but then I wouldn't expect it to fire either.

I've not done the timing on the Bongo yet but I thought there was a sure-fire way of ensuring everything was lined up correctly. Did you check the factsheet/manual?

I don't think so but would have thought you can buy them from a Motor factors if you take one in for them to compare.

Yes I did every thing by the book, but I could stil be out, it seems the most logical as everything has also been done by the book, not being a mechanic it's the only way I know how. Thanks for your suggestions, it's great beingable to talk it over with some-one.Tom

Tom - I would wait for a second or third opinion before stripping it down again. Give it until tomorrow and see if you get any replies tonight.

not speaking with any authority.....
but could it be the advance mechanism?
I had a kangoo van with lucas pump and the advance mech failed, would start, was slower to rev, and blew quite a lot of smoke.... I think if memory serves me right, it was white smoke
now I know the pump isn't lucas (cos it will run veg) so I'd guess it's nippon denco... but I don't know what advance mechanism it has.... just a thought really!

If the washers are copper heat them over the gas
to a cherry red then drop in water, they will go like
a lump of tripe and will seal when you put them back.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm misreading the timing marks on the sprockets, can't think of any thing else. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I must say that this Bongo is my worst vehicle I've ever had the misfortune to own. Tom.

Sorry you are having so much grief with this Tom. It does look like you have the valve timing out and as you say misreading the timing marks. Having not done the job myself I can't really offer more advice other than to say persevere with it as I'm sure it will come right in the end.

No, I won't give up, but it's so frustrating, I've had the Bongo now for 4 years, and it's been nothing but trouble, I've probably only had it on the road for about 18 months in all that time. We bought it as a retirement vehicle, to travel Europe, but it's cost so much in repair bills , that plan is out the window. Now I need it for when my Assie family come over for our Golden wedding. Sorry for the sob story. Tom.
