Which Oil ?

After reading the Lubricants page in the members site
I am still a little confused Synthetic or what.

Is it OK to use a 15/40 synthetic Oil from Wilkinsons £7-99 for 5 litres
on a 95 plate AFT with ? 66000km on the clock or what is the best oil to get instead.

I bought some in error but decided against using as Halfords 5/30 seemed to work so well. On a separate thread a few days back someone confirmed that 5/30 was much better than 15/40 which had an adverse effect on fuel economy. Halfords were doing Diesel semi-synthetic 5/30 on offer when I bought some on Sunday. Still £31 for 10 litres - ouch!

Do they also have the Oil filters in Stock for a Bongo at Halfords :?: as my local Mazda dealer has just sold the only one he had in stock this week
or is it best to order one online

Are you sure that's synthetic at that price - seems very cheap :?

yes it is £7-99 for 5 litres of synthetic turbo diesel engine oil in Wilkinsons

It won't be synthetic at that price, it's even unlikely to be semi-synthetic. If you read the label it will say something like "made with synthetic technology" or some other dubious marketing speak.

Same sort of drivel as in cosmetic ads, it sounds technical but means SFA.

If so note the use of the words "Synthetic Formula" which implies marketing speak for "We want you to think it's synthetic, but it isn't really"

I think their oils are supplied by Comma so it may be worth looking at their site.

And that oil is really for petrol engines BTW - is yours a petrol?

Yep I noticed afterwards that the other one was only 2litres.

I've just checked the Comma Oils website and they recommend two completely different oils (and different grades) for the Ranger with WL-T engine and the Mazda 2500 which I though was mechanically identical.

Aren't they the Freda and Bongo of pick-ups?

In a nutshell - yes.
Our resident lubricant expert (Colin Lambert) is of the opinion that synthetic oils give very limited, if any, benefit in an old engine. Using a 15/40 will use a little more fuel than a 5/30, as the engine has to move a thicker liquid around.

The Extra £15 I will save using the Oil from Wilkinsons instead of Halfords will pay for the Oil Filter :D

Not worth the risk - replacing a turbo is very expensive.

I'm in the same conundrum. Read Lubricants factsheet and still unsure which type would suit me. Plus I guess I have a few factors to consider.

(1) I've just done 1000km on my recently replaced-refurbished enigne and, though I haven't confirmed this with API or my mechanic yet, I think I am supposed to change the oil & filter;
(2) I'm heading for 7-weeks in the Alps;
(3) I leave on Friday so think I need to find a place where I can get filters and oil off the shelf; and for completeness
(4) My bongo is a 95 N-reg with over 100,000kms on the clock.

The factsheet suggests 5W/30 for cold temperatures. I can get 5L of Halfords synthetic 5W/30 oil on sale for £16.49 at the moment. Should I go for this or should I stick with 10W/30 (I can get this off the shelf from Motor World for £15-£20). Assuming 10W/40 is between 5W/30 and 10W/30, maybe I should go for that...??....

I think I can get whatever oil I want from Motor World, does anyone know where I can get Oil filters for Bongos off the shelf, in London?
