Bongo Fury

I finally got round to parking somewhere flat (not on the hill where I live) and leaving the van to go cold to check the oil.

Seat up and back no probs. Took out the dipstick, removed the cap and hey presto - I was expecting a nice straight shute like in previous vehciles and it wasn't there.

I couldn't get the dipstick in because I had no idea of the angle. Can someone give me a tip before I attempt this one again. I couldn't keep trying because I was in a hurry but I would like to drive somewhere flat and try again this afternoon if I get the help beforehand - if not I would like to do it tommorrow before a long journey.

Sounds to me like you're removing the dipstick and trying to check the oil level down through the filler hole, under the cap

Just remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, replace it back down the same hole it came from - remove and see where the oil has settled on the stick.

I'm having a wild guess that your previous car was a Peugeot or Citroen????

I don't understand why you should be having a problem as it's very straightforward. It's covered in a fact sheet and I also believe there's a visual on Youtube as well.

You've got me confused here - where are you trying to put the dipstick?
It lives in it's own tube and that's where you measure the oil level.

Well of course I was confused that is far too easy. I have never had a car where the dipstick lived inside like that.

I have always had fiats and one renault so far. I had read the fact sheet but still missed the fact that it lived in its oil hole.

Quite right rooster. There's more than one new owner didnt know how to get to the engine, let alone the dipstick

one of the ones i went to look at, the guy dint even know it was under the seats , he thought it was under the bonnet under the plastic intake

When I got my first mid engined van home I went to check the oil etc but when I lifted the bonnet there was nothing there!

I actually had to phone the dealer who told me not to worry as there was a spare engine between the driver and passenger seats

All the Fiats (and that's lots) and all the Renaults (and that's several) I've owned, have all had exactly the same system as the Bongo.
In fact every car I've ever had has had the same system - dipstick lives in dipstick tube and that is where the oil is checked as well.

You aren't confusing the transmission dipstick with the engine one are you?

The reason I tok a guess at Peug or citroen is that the 1.9 diesels have an integrated dipstick/oil filler - you pour the oil down a hoooge dipstick hole!

Correction you put a tiny dipstick through a small hole in the oil filler cap.

OK, more omega3 for me - point is I remember it's the same hole for the dipstick and filler

I must admit i dont think i know of anybody that has ever bought a SECOND fiat or renault ...Usually owning just the one is enough!
