guys,
loud whistle/screech at 1500+ revs when under load, lack of power also with none of the usual "boost" at the same revs. I've checked the drivebelts and they are ok. How much for a turbo!!??
Thanks :(

Have a look to see if No 1 manifold stud is still with you.! not a big job if it is bust.
Under the passenger seat above and to the right of the alternator. It's the only stud you can see.

I think there are one or two turbos on ebay at present.

Good point, Must be turbo. I was just going on the screeching noise.

check the actuator on the turbo, could just be the diaphram leaking,if you remove the rubber pipe and try and blow and suck, you should feel resistance,if there is none it may be the diaphram in the actuator split, quite a common problem on other turbos.

Thanks guys, you've confirmed my fear. Oh well, turbo it is then, I'll make it a christmas present to myself. Got my local garage booked to double check on monday.

You ain't gonna believe it! I wasn't happy with the noise etc, so took a few things apart and found a large piece of plastic bag down the air-intake (next to the battery). pulled it out and job sorted!!?? Must've strained the turbo into squeeking (?) or maybe one of the intake pipes was sucking in air next to the turbo (i'll check to see if any are not tightened), but all seems ok now. I still can't work out how the plastic got in, maybe blown up from underneath by chance. Phew. :D

Good news - make sure you've got an air filter somewhere in the filter housing!

Great it may have been the air trying to get past the plastic that was screeching.

good to hear it was a cheap fix

Excellent news brookie. Someone else had a similar problem when a complete bottle found its way down there. How!?!?!

thats because i keep a spare bottle of water in there mike, and it had fallen over and blocked the air intake.
