Bongo Fury

I am thinking of replacing the ceiling light in the back of my Freda with something giving enough light to comfportabley read by. I've looked at the fitment and cant see any obvious way of removing the clear cover without blindly tugging away whcih I am reluctant to do. Any advice please?

If I wanted to replace the complete fitment how is this removed also?

Just a suggestion, but if it is a light specifically for reading you are after, we find that a head torch is fantastic. No matter where you place a fixed light it never seems to be in the right position for your comfort or placing the light where its needed. With a head torch however, the light is there wherever you are sat (or laid) whether in the van or in the awning.
Just a suggestion.....................I'll get me coat!.

Thanks Steve - I'll look into that - still would like to know about the light fitting though.

You may just find that the bulb needs replacing - as they age the performance seems to dramatically reduce.

The ceiling light should give plenty of light to read by. It may be the tube that has gone, but poor connections seem to be a common cause of reduced candlepower. Sometimes jiggling the tube around in it's fittings magically restores full light. On mine this had no effect so I unscrewed the light from the roof board, unplugged it & had a good look. One of the spring clips holding the tube connector was not making good contact. I pushed it all back together & reinstalled it - intending to solder it up when I got back home. However this did the trick & restored full light, so soldering is on the back burner for now.

Thanks Rhod - I looked at Ozrics video and tried to get the cover off my light as shown. It wont budge no matter how much I squeeze, I can see where the lugs are ok.

Just nipped out of the office to check. I have to squeeze quite hard on both sides at the rear of the light, just in front of the lugs. Then pull down gently to disengage the rear lugs & slide back. I used two hands just now - it is pretty firm!

Didn't make it clear in my last post, but the spring connector goes through a slot into the circuit board & is soldered to the connection on the board. This soldered connection to mine has broken. Before I figured this out I was considering a second-hand unit.

Thanks again Rhod - I pulled and pulled and no movement but then... I pushed the back edge of the cover with a small screwdriver blade and hey presto it came out easily. I'm beginning to find my way around the Freda - taking the back interior panels off, removing the instrument panel, accessing the back of the radio, fitting a leisure battery, repairing a dent, reversing the middle bench. Never took much interest in my previous vehicle - a Skoda Felicia which served me well - the Freda seems to invite attention!
