Bongo Fury

Hi,

Done a search and wanted to double check if it's okay to run the same wheel/tyre sizes all round on a V6 petrol 2WD bongo?

Size I'm thinking of is 225/45 R17.

At the risk of getting it in the neck from the purists, i'd say that was a fine size of tyre to use...Just check the weight limitation of the tyres 100w's all round to be on the safe side

I am now running 225/45/18's

Whilst on this subject, can someone in possession of an owner's handbook tell me definitively what tyres are supposed to be on a 4wd Bongo, including all the load rating & speed rating blurb?

The correct size is printed inside the driver's door aperture if I remember.

I have 205/65/15 all round on my 2WD

These sizes and specifications have been posted many times but to no avail, it appears that you do your own thing, cross your fingers and hope.

Here's to a frost and ice free winter or we will be a few Bongo's less in the spring.

My Bongo reads 35mph when i am doing 30 and 78 when i am doing 70.

Do you think 225/55 R17 tyres will correct this a bit???

Not too bothered as i have learned to convert in me head, but every hour my odo is adding up to 8 miles to my Bongo's milage.
Not good on a low milage vehicle..

Dave, a larger overall aspect ratio will correct the speedo, My bongo originally had 195/70/15 tyres, and overead about the same amount as yours does now.

Now i'm running 225/45/18's the speedo is showing 71 mph at an actual 70.

50 section tyres should be a bit cheaper than 45's too.

50's as franco points out will also be fine.

I didn't have the tyre calculator at hand, so i was going from memory.

They'll help a bit but 225/65 R17 would be nearer - have a look at this to see what effect different size tyres have http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

65's on a 17" rim sounds a bit big franco...

...But if the calc says its ok.... Hmm, i dunno...

I just had a look on the tyre calc, and it reckons that 65's on a 17" will underead by 5.8 mph at 60...if changing from 215/65/15's

The best size seems to be 225/50/17.

Ahh! so my 10% over-reading speedo would be cured with a set of 65's on 17" rims. Is that right??

So much prettier than just getting a new speedo too.

Erm, not exactly... I had originally 195/70/15 tyres, with an overreading speedo... When i upgraded to bigger 225/45/18 tyres,according to the calculator,the overall circumference difference was almost identical.

According to the tyre calc, i should still have an overeading speedo, in reality,the speedo is now accurate.

If you have 15" wheels , and move to 225/65/17 tyres,according to the calc, you would actually be travelling at 65.8 mph whilst your speedo is showing only 60 mph.

In reality,if your speedo now overeads by about 10% (like mine used to) moving to 65 profile tyres would cause it to underead a little.

If 50 sections were employed, it would be pretty much bang on i reckon.

225/65/17 tyres is an unusual size to run on a bongo.

What size tyres do other bongo peeps run with 17"s?

Hmm. Complicated isn't it. . . .

I've got 215/65's on standard Mazda 15inch alloys.

Any chance you could work out what profile 17's would bring it into line??

225/50/17. It's a bit of a black art in reality though.

My speedo according to the tyre calc should still be overeading...but it doesn't...

There must be some other variable that i haven't taken into account...

I suspect that the magnetic field created by the sun,is weakening due to the ever expanding universe,even though we are revolving at 14,000 mph, we are also travelling through the universe(at a tangent) at 24,000 mph, with lateral influences from dense planets such as jupiter,and venus,causing further magnetic discrepencies...

I'll put the theory to my local kwik fit fitter,and see what he thinks

Must be that. Mazda had obviously taken this into account at the design stage. In Japan they are nearer the equator hence the temperal gyroflux is set to 5 or 7 degrees north.

Up here we are around the 53 degree mark. Must throw it right out.

Had they officially imported to the UK we wouldn't have had this problem.

Off thread - again! but I'd like to challenge the 14,000 rotation speed. If I remember rightly from my O level days, the circumference of the Earth is roughly 23,500 miles. It takes 24 hours to rotate so it would seem that we are spinning at nearer a thousand miles an hour. . . .
