Gearbox problems - no more than 3rd and jumping reverse

Have just bought a Bongo and am new to the forum, so hello to all!
On the way up the M1, it became apparant that the automatic gearbox would not get higher than 3rd (so it was 50mph at about 3000 rpm). When I arrived home and tried to reverse, it was quite high revs until the gear engaged and it "spluttered" back.
Any ideas and any help would be helpful. I live in Newcastle upon Tyne, so if this is a service / replacement box problem, a pointer in the right direction for a specialist would be fantastic.
Otherwise, my first Bongo is wonderful !

Silly question but are you sure you hadn't pushed the Hold button on the side of the gear lever (Hold should light up on the dash if you have)?
Welcome to the forum and I hope it's a simple fix.

Hold light is off. When it is engaged at let's say 40 mph nothing happens. I presume (only presume) that somehow it is stuck in a mode that only allow gears 1,2,3, hence high revs at 50mph. It seems to have the hold engaged, but without the light / switch. Is there someway to reset the electronic for the gearbox ? Just to test if it is an electronic problem. Or are other problems the cause, perhaps ?

Sorry, I've not much idea about auto boxes - it's just that it sounded like the hold button had been pushed. There are some real experts on here, so you should get a detailed response fairly soon.

Don't know a lot about auto's but have you checked the fluid level
dip stick is under the drivers seat I think you start the engine
change through all the gears then check it with the engine ticking
over, someone may be sure if that's the way to do it.

There is almost certainly a relevant fact sheet in the Members' Only website.
The forum is free.
The Members' Club is a snip at a tenner or so a year.

Bongomonkey. Although it may well be that the problem turns out to be simple to resolve (AFT fluid, electronic sensor problem etc. rather than gearbox fault per se), you haven't said whether you bought it from a dealer or private. If a dealer (and really even if private) you should be able to contact the vendor and discuss things (I find it hard to imagine that even a private vendor can completely escape some obligation to explain how something not pointed out by them happened so soon after purchase).
Good luck - keep us posted.

If it isn't a fluid level problem and I hope it is, but the rear clutch in the 'box is common with 4th gear and reverse

Sounds as though it is slipping.
That will require a gearbox overhaul

And you shouldn't be paying for it if so

Wayne has a gearbox still, if worst comes to worst.
