What's this oily leak?

Oil seems to be topic of the week for me. Thanks to everyone for all the help with my sump plug washer post -- onwards with that, but here's another...
On a couple of days last week I noticed an oily patch (about 4 inches diam) on the drive under Freda. Investigated underneath and cleaned everything with paper towels. Checked engine oil level (fine), gear oil (fine), power steering fluid (seems fine, but difficult to tell with funny colour of the container).
Next day no oil on drive, but little fresh oily patch on the under-engine cover from the wee tiny-finger-sized hole just back from the sump plug space. Sump plug dry, gear box dry, dunno what the big funnel-shaped metal thing is in front of that but there's a little rubbery nipple thing...it doesn't seem to have any fresh oil on it, though that area was oily when I first looked.
So...where's this coming from? And what else can I check? And should I worry? There's been a very slight seepage since I got the van in June, but this is the first time it's actually left signs on the ground.
And perhaps I should learn what the big funnel-shaped metal thing is....
