On the Driver side immediately uner the dash on the left hand side there is an Oval black plastic 'thing' that retracts slightly on both ends. Any ideas?

No idea what you mean there BB. Just been out to mine & had a fumble in the dark & can find nothing like that.
Where exactly do you mean? Around the rear blind switch maybe???

Imagine you were sitting in the driving seat and you put your hand on your left leg - it is just there on the column but underneath the Dash.. if that makes sense?

Sounds like the paddle you pull out to adjust the steering wheel height/angle.
Pop it out & give it a go. . . .

You can find out all about it in the Mazda Bongo Friendee Owners Manual which is available from the Club Shop. Tells you just about how everything in a Bongo or Freda works.

I have done so without any problem at all - not on the Bongo though.

You tend to fall off the road, due to driving without due care and attention, apparently.

No - you can still steer with your teeth

Those were the days keefy. I had a Morris 1000 that suffered from serious brake fade (like they all did) going down a hill with 4 adults in it. I regularly went down Westerham Hill (Kent) in this condition. Near the bottom of the hill was a minor road where people would sometimes chance their arm and nip across in front of the oncoming traffic. I just had to hope noone did it while I was on approach as - by that time - holding the car back on the brakes (I didnt dare do it all on the engine - it would have blown up) was nigh on impossible.

This thing is nothing to do with the steering - we checked it out today!
