i thought i had cracked my overheating problems ....the last time it overheated was 4 months ago on the iow since then replaced waterpump replaced hoses ..new thermostsat new coolant and thorough bleed and have had a happy summers driving now i have decamped back to the iow have been back here a month and on sunday notice the needle slowly rising as iam about to kick on up a steep hill fully laden

parked up on hill asap cooled down went for lunch ....topped up with 50/50 coolant and back to campsite to investigate ....anyway i have to forget the overheat for a mo as soon as i lifted the passengers seat ...started to have a look about inspecting the hoses all ok ...at the same time one of the belts catches my eye
it had two nasty rips one almost right across .....luckily i had a set of belts on board ... which i decided to fit today

everything was going ok until it came to tightening the nut that goes across the alternator to the tensioner (bolt) i don't know why but i decided to give it one last half turn and

bang it snapped

off to search for and found a scrappie ....managed to find a lookalikie tensioner gizmo off an izuzu and low and behold it fitted like a glove and works too

now i just gotta sort out this damn overheating

hmmn.............i may be wrong, but..........
i think the belts or one of them can cause overheating issues

, if i remember its got something to do with the water pump.
I just remember reading a post about something on them lines, one of the more techie overheating type people may be able to help like Haydn or Dandy may be able to explain more

i do hope you are right waycar...it had crossed me mind

(honest)
but it twas the outer belt which may be the aircon belt which was ripped ...i havent a danny(la rue) which one is which......just a guess but from the waterpump outwards do we have the waterpump belt ....alternator belt ....air con belt ...if so... tis the air con .....would (could ) this cause the overheating??? as a passing thought yesterday i answered no can anyone confirm this .....as i said before i hope iam wrong and the belt failing can cause an overheat
good luck all

The alternator/waterpump is a 2 belt design and the aircon is one belt if I remember...............

Why would a slipping belt cause coolant loss? You said you had to top up.
A slipping waterpump belt might well cause overheating and also not charge the battery> "you say it was the A/C belt.
I suspect that if you suffered coolant loss without actually boiling over then you could well have a coolant leak and the tatty belt was coincidental.
You have 2x waterpump belts which also turn the alternator
1x aircon belt

Am i correct in thinking that if there are no obvious water leaks, (and the head gasket is ok) then, if the hoses have already been checked, the next port of call is the water pump? I seem to recall these leaking from the inner seal, and the leak not always being immediately obvious....
It may be worth considering a coolant loss alarm, or something similar flippa?
Good call with the belt!

well thanks for the replies ....like i started saying i had a stroke of luck regards the overheat causing me to take a look under the passenger seat and finding the ripped belt........what ever caused the overheat is a complete mystery i had'nt lost much coolant ........all the hoses are new but checked them over alls well, i may have had a weep on the top hose to the metal so i tightened up all the jubilee clips and managed to shove the top hose up the metal pipe a little ....topped up and bled this morning just taken for a run and alls well for now at least ....cheers big d but i renewed the water pump a few months back so thats crossed off the list.......

cheers all
