Over-keen radiator fan!

Hi,

The radiator fan on my 2000 Bongo comes on and off (as expected), but more or less as soon as I start the engine (not as expected!) which is at the time very cold! (first time I noticed it was after being parked up on site for 2 nights).

Is this normal? I would expect the fan would come on when the engine was over running temperature, and off again once the radiator had cool the coolant back down again.

Is it likely to be the temperature sensor for the fan, the thermostat stuck either open or closed, or is there a "summer/winter" setting somewhere. Is there a Japan setting as it was directly imported?!

Hi John,

Maybe thats just the way they are!

I guess if the termostat is working correctly then it won't make much difference to the engine as the cooled coolant won't get that far!

We will see what the experts say,

ours did that just after changing the antifreeze and before
I got rid of all the airlocks check the water level
not done it since its been bled

PS it was the scavenging fan that came on not the rad fans

Right, I have been reading through posts about fans and hot handbrakes.

It would appear that the Bongo might have 3 fans!

1. Scavenger which appears to cool the engine compartment and helps prevent hot handbrake handles?
2. Radiator fan, which appears somehow to be linked to the Climate Control - maybe due to a heavier load on the engine?
3. A fan on the climate control unit to remove excess heat from the aircon unit.

Now, I must admit, I have been playing with the climate control recently, so will probably have left it on. This might explain the fan noise when the engine is cold, but the aircon is on.

I will investigate tomorrow which fan is running - if I can find the air con one!

And don't forget of course, the other fan in Jap vehicles...

Oh yes, I forgot that one! Is it under the passenger side with the flare, or in with the jack?

Essential Japanese travelling equipment!

Ah ha!

It appears that the Auto switch on the aircon sets the fan off on the radiator - well, not from the scavenger fan as I had my head in the engine compartment with my finger on the aircon buttons! (Glad nobody was watching from behind!)

In other posts, there was mention of 2 radiator fans?

So, does the system pre-cool the engine for the extra load, and hence I have remote control fans, or is my aircon gas low so the system is doing extra work to cool things? Even set at 25 degrees?!

Questions, Questions!

Dave

When the air con is on the 2 fan's on the radiator come on
to cool the air com radiator the the two radiators are
back to back, when it's the air con switching them on
they run slower than if the engine is getting hot.

Ah ha,

Thanks Ralph, I had not looked at the radiators in detail - still in the first couple of weeks driving/owning the Bongo.
