oil drip

hi, i have a not too bad, but annoying drip, i think coming from between the engine and gearbox. it's clear and 'light' so i am guessing it's from gearbox. (ie definitely not black engine oil). it's hard to pin point exactly where it's coming from, so before going to the garage, is the most likely cause that the seal wants replacing between engine and gearbox? is it a straight forward job? are there any other 'bongo-isms' that it could well be, so i don't sound too green at the garage!? thanks. Mark

Possibly check the sump gasket on the gearbox - oil will be a very light red/ clear. Sump is the square tray under the gearbox approx 1ft x 1ft. Its about £25 to replace the gasket, but a good opportunity to change the gearbox oil and clean filter.

stupid question are you sure its oil & its not coming from the air unit (I.E. condensation).
This can look a bit milky

Clear and light - are you sure it's not diesel? Only ask because I've just fixed a diesel leak from my fuel injector pump and a few folk seem to have the same fault (see thread called "Diesel smell when hot") - any chance it could be the same leak running down the side of the engine to the point where you can see it dripping off?

Cheers

hi, thanks for tips. definitely not air con, as not used it, and it is 'oily' when washed away by rain, but something to remember come the summer. i'll look into gasket and fuel points, but re the fuel, would it drip even when switched off and pump not running?

There is a fair amount of fuel held in the injector pump so I think it's possible that it could drip when the engine is not running.

But if your situation is anything like mine (dripping diesel from injector pump) you'd get the occasional smell of diesel in the cab :?
