Hi, just a quick question regarding cooling systems, do motor vehicles have thermostats mainly for in car heating? the reason i ask is when i was younger we use to remove thermostats from known overheating turbo cars with no effects on performance whatsoever just a loss of heating in the car. I dont want a debate on the bongo system its just something im working out.

Thanks

Thermostats allow the engine to operate at it's most efficient temperature and acts as a valve to achieve that. At this predetermind temperature the engine internals have expanded to an acceptable level to achieve good gas sealing etc. The car heating system just becomes a product of that.
Removing the thermostat is going to accelerate engine wear and give excessive fuel consumption.
