Bongo Fury

hi all - hanks to the wonderful techie forum and archives we correctly identified that our manifold stud had broken (the old screaming problem) and ordered the bits which have just come – but our garage (new to bongos but great so far) has said that the bolt has sheared inside the block and he cant get at it without removing the engine, which is sounding expensive – is this right and do people generally drop the engine or lift it (he’s trying to work it out but I thought I’d ask)???? Oh for a bongo friendly garage in North Birmingham!!

Which bolt is it?? if the extream left one over the alternater then it is a very simple job that should take no more than 2 hours and not cost mote than £100. Just a case of drilling out and helicoiling. I would think the same would apply to any of the bolts but others may need a few more bits removing. It is normally the No 1 stud which you can see above and right of the alternator.

What bits?? with luck you will only need a bit of oversize stud.

Removing the engine to replace a manifold bolt? Interesting practice for making huge profits. Unless access is that bad that you can't get tools in (and I'm pretty sure that's not the case with all the manifold bolts) then I'm afraid your mechanic is wrong or maybe he doesn't want the work. It's just as Haydn has outlined - drill out the old then fit helicoil with new bolt. All do-able with engine in situ.

also.....the stud doesn't go into the "block" it goes into the head - change your garage!
