Rattle when I roll??

Ideas please.

Bongo has developed an external sound like I'm dragging a bunch of keys along the ground when I'm moving.

It isn't the exhaust or the heat shield between it and the spare wheel.

It isn't a stone in the spare wheel.

All the suspention/anti roll etc seem solid enough.

There is nothing unusual behind the wheel trims.

It only happens when I'm moving...downhill is worst.

It isn't related to engine speed/revs.

I've run out of ideas.

Hi Harry,

Just a thought, are your rear brake pads getting worn? I had a similar fault, when I checked for causes I found that the inners were down to the wear groove and theres a clip fitted to the pad which scrapes on the disc to give the sound you've heard . You'll hear it more going downhill as the brakes are being used more!!!

Hi

I have the very same noise, my bongo has gone into day for service(Ian

Taylors) plus other things wobbly steering wheel when braking(suspect

disc`s) plus that dam noise the engineer said he knew exactly what it was

and said he would fix it (it also happens when I close the passenger door

whilst stationary)

So I will let you no what the outcome (when he as fixed it)

Keep you posted

Thanks Will

My mechanic is away until Thursday...then we'll see.

Been out on a 50 mile run around the Lakes today....noise getting more persistant and possibly louder...but performance (including brakes) seems unaffected.

cheers

The story so far.

Rear brakes checked today.

Plenty of wear still left on pads BUT I've got some bits missing.

There apparently should be two retaining clips/springy things per side and there is only one per side...now that isn't a disaster cos I've done over 100,000 km since I bought the vehicle two years ago and no one has touched them in the meanwhile.

One of the clips/retainers had come undone so he refitted it and we hoped that the rattle would be cured....no such luck.

So it is back to the drawing board

1. Where do I get a new set of 4 retaining clips? Neither AVA or Bongobits have them on their lists.

2. I suppose the next step is to investigate the front brakes etc. They have been a bit squealy lately but my garage cleaned them up and checked them a couple of weeks ago...just BEFORE the rattle started (suspicion strikes????)

I'll keep you informed

Just checked the diagram on Parts finder and there is only one retaining clip/springy thing shown!

So that is that discounted.

Front brakes under maximum suspicion.

Get the front brakes checked as soon as possible. If it happened after the garage looked at the front brakes then I would rule that out first. If a pad comes out you will lose all braking.

Cured?...not

Well I had my front brakes checked and they are fine....but the rattle was getting louder and more persistant.

So yesterday evening when visiting a mates up in the hills I accidentally clobbered my propshaft with a ruddy great boulder which flipped up whilst negotiating a bend on 1in4 unmade road.

Guess what.....no more rattles...just a ruddy great vibration at over 40mph and play in the propshaft.

Now I'm wondering if the mechanic at my garage made a bodge job refitting it a couple of weeks ago when I had the shaft universal joints repaired (for the second time).

He didn't take the plastic guard off when refitting..could he have misaligned summut?

The garage boss isn't back until next thursday so I'm having to take things very steady at the mo.

cheers

Hope things get sorted OK harry - cant really say more than that. At least you seem to have a 'line' on what could be the cause, which is something 8)
