Electric mirror drive

Post by Bongomatic » Tue Aug 14, 2007 10:02 pm

Just looked at a nice Bongo, and intend to buy it after a 3 month search...

The driver's side mirror doesn't fold, and although the horizontal adjustment works, the vertical doesn't [The passenger side is fully function in all axes]

Any thoughts much appreciated as ever

Cheers

My neighbour has the same problem with his , was told by the local dealer its either the wiring from door post through the door wires have a tendancy to break there or its the motor itself which is about 60-70 quid i think according to the dealer
hope this helps

Rob,
Thanks, I suspected that the wiring could well be the culprit, as the motor is doing part of the job.

I'll have a closer look once I own it and it's bedded in

Cheers

If the motor is still whirring away, but the mirror doesn't fold, chances are the worm drive gear isn't engaging inside the mirror mount.

There is a method of repairing this (mikeonb4c recently had
this problem ) but i cant for the life of me remember if the repair was effective.

I think a 9mm drill bit was employed for the repair.

Mike will probably elaborate.

One of mine packed up, but i replaced both mirrors when i had the opportunity to upgrade to chrome versions.

I'm due to write up my notes into a factsheet when I get a moment, but yes I managed to do a good mechanical repair to both mirrors. See

http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ing+mirror

As BigDaddy said, mechanical failure in my case was characterisd by the retractor motor continuing to run even when the mirror was fully extended.

One of my repaired mirrors immediately failed again, this time it simply went dead. I tracked this down to what is almost certainly a blown component in the switch in the motor gearbox that is used to cut power to the retractor motor when end of travel is reached. I've unsoldered and removed the duff switch and the the mirror now behaves fine as a conventional folding mirror. I may just leave it at that.

But if the mirror adjustor motor system is only partially functional, it does suggest a possible break in the wiring somewhere in the system.

Good luck tracking it down
