fuel gauge probs

whilst driving down to maidstone today i noticed that my fuel gauge was only reading half full, this was a bit of a surprise as i only filled it up the other day at my local morrisons but what i also noticed whilst filling up was that my guage was saying empty but only took £41 of diesel ( strange i thought ) anyway when checking after filling the guage was reading just under a full tank, thats good i thought all seems ok, when leaving maidstone this afternoon the guage was only reading between a quarter & empty so i pull into bluebell hill shell station & stick £20 in, the guage now went up to half, now i thinking WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON, ( thats the short clean version ) so off i go towards home & when i get to bexley village the guage is now reading "0" empty, nowt, nuffink, zilch, has anyone had any probs either with the sender unit or the dial in the dash before, help greatly appreciated, LEE

forgot to say that the dial in dash has no movement at all when the ignition is turned on, LEE

best reason for this is the fuel sender needs a better earth connection.
look in search for details but basically remover flooring cover under front seats, remove cover and clean up metal screw, crimp on a new cable and connect to the "black" wire for the guage, thats assuming 95 reg bongo.

Fuel gauge doesn't work through ignition - it always shows the fuel level (or should do

)
Totally agree with dreamwarrioruk regarding earth connection.

thanks dreamwarrior, i have just found this search by peg leg pete.
Hi Shane, have you checked the earth wire on the fuel sender, its hidden under the carpet under middle seats, you will see a metal plate undo the screws to reveal the sender, check contacts are clean and re earth if necessary

It's easy to do guys, it must be cause I did it and it took no time at all, just slide the rear seats back, middle ones forward, grab the carpet on the offside and pull hard, it will come away, under the metal plate is the fuel sender, I drilled a new hole and stuck a screw in it, cleaned the earth wire and put a new length on as a back up ans attached it to the screw, I now have two earths and no more trouble, the carpet goes back easy too. There are loads on it here, that's how I found it.

I agree with David, it is easy. Just have a play around.

Hi,
I've read the 'Bollicky' thread:
http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ght=#83903
And this seems to be my problem (adding an earth didn't solve it, shorting connectors in plug gave full reading), but just one quick question before I go at it with a screwdriver, by 'removing the fuel sender' does he mean the whole plate held in by lots of screws? I didn't want to be touching all those fuel pipes unless I have to!
Cheers
Steve (having a break whilst waiting for replies to come rolling in!)

I too have noticed that my fuel gauge is up the duff! When you say pull the carpets hard is there a certain amount of newton force or just HARD as you can???

mp3oplecarrier,
yes you have to remove the plate with all the screws in. It is not a problem, the fuel pipes should just pull off with a set of grips.

Yeah dude you have to pull like taking money from the taxman but it will come up. Good luck.
