Bump stop fell off !

I've just completed an oil change and all the filters plus followed the brilliant guide to changing the cam belt.
(although I wish I'd read it more carefully before I started as I didn't have a 38mm socket or any thread lock)

On completion I went for a quick drive round the block.
On my return I found a bump rubber lying on the drive.

Can anyone tell me where this goes?

I had a look under the van but couldn't see anything obvious.

Well found brora! (the threads) that took me back seeing all those old forum usernames (ah, those were the days... )

Hi javelin, as you can probably see from the links, the bumpstop fits directly above the rear axle, to stop the axle actually striking the chassis when the suspension is working to extremities.

Mine fell off a few weeks back.

The bumpstop is bonded onto a metal plate, and its common for it to drop off the plate eventually.

To repair, remove the plate, (two 12mm bolts i think) and give the plate a damn good clean.

I soaked mine in thinners for a few hours, although i,m sure brake cleaner would work just as well.

Then, key the inner face of the bumpstop with a bit of emery cloth / scotchpad / or wet and dry.

I used a bonding compound called Sikaflex to re-bond the rubber to the baseplate. I have heard that others have used araldite successfully.

I used Sikaflex because of its "rubbery" properties when fully set.

After the initial bonding, i left it off the bongo for a couple of days ( i wasn't using the bongo at the time ) with a fair old weight on the bumpstop, to aid the adhesion of the sikaflex.

When you are happy that they have fused together successfully, then in typical hayne's fashion, reverse procedure to removal to re-fit

(p.s., have a bunch of various extension bars at hand for the ratchet, the passenger side stop is trickier for access than the drivers side)

I suppose that most motor factors can supply it,(or an alternative)

I have always bought quality bodykits for my cars made from G.R.P. or purim, and the higher end kits usually throw in a few tubes of sikaflex.
( I have stockpiled these down the years, and i'm on the last tube now)
The kits i prefer tend to be german (reiger, wolf) therefore the adhesive is usually german. It comes in those big tubes like you'd get silicone sealant in.

I think its produced by a company called Sika.

If all else fails, try a boat chandlers. It is widely used on boats. Probably be very expensive though, as chandlers seem to think that anyone who owns a boat must be a multi-millionaire!

Thanks for that guys. I know the name Sika well from my days in civil engineering but thats a fat lot of good in the context of this debate 8)

The normal car shops don't have it but the paint places do. It's a bit more of a trade product.
