Bongo Fury

I have just purchased a Bongo, privately from an ad on this forum and am generally pleased. The air con only works with the fan on position one in the front, if I put the fan in any other position it goes off altogether, including the light on the aircon switch and the aircon in the back. Anyone any ideas ?????? Thanks in advance.

Does the fan actually work in all the other positions??

It sounds to me as though your fan resistor pack is at fault. If you can confirm that the ventilation fan is inoperative in positions 2, 3 and 4, that would confirm it. If the fan won't run, then the aircon. won't, either. I repaired mine not long ago, refering to the guidance contained in the technical notes on this site. If you can use a soldering iron, it's quite straightforward.

BUT the resistor usually goes cos the heater fan is running 'tight' and overloads it. The heater fan usually runs 'tight' as a consequence of corrosion caused by water getting on it (but it can be taken out and got running freely many BF members attest). Water get on the heater fan motor due to blockage of the windscreen gutter drain ( which block easily and need regular clearing). So dont waste money on a new resistor until you have fixed the other points, or it will 'blow' again.

....this is what I've learned on BF - loads on here about it. But I've not had the problem myself.

Thanks for the replies ! The a/c only works in position one and the air flow coming out of the vents is barely noticeable. If the fan is put into any other position then the whole a/c system, including the rear, goes off ??
The fan in the rear works well in all positions, but only when the front fan is in position one.

Mine started to edo exactly that a week ago!

Trouble is ...I'm no mechanic (or electrician).

yes deffinately you resistor pack, you have a separte 1 one in the back, thats why your rear one works on all sppeeds and yourfront one only works on one, you may be able to fix the front resistor, but make sure you check the fan motor fist or you will blow the resistor again, (if your fan motor is seized/rusted up.

do a search of this site, and you will find loads of threads on how to fix them.

Just one other point, ict... it is a bit odd that your fan doesn't work in position 4-because in that position, the fan resistor pack is out of circuit. No resistance is required for maximum speed (note that using lower fan speeds does not use less juice-it just dumps electrical power as heat, via the resisters). Of course, if the pack is badly damaged that might explain it, but tread carefully, you're not home yet. The other thing to note is that, despite the doomsayers above, your fan motor might well be fine, just as mine was (I've had my Bongo 3 years, and I make sure the scuttle drain is clear). Frankly, I think the resister pack was badly assembled in the first place, a bit like the fuel contents sensor, but that's another story! Certainly, check that the motor is free to turn, and check it FIRST (not fist). You might as well lubricate it whilst you're in there, too. Let us know how you get on. Good luck!

Problem finally sorted today..............at a cost ! The heater/ac fan had seized which had caused the relay to overheat and all of the connections had come unsoldered. I deliberated between dismantle, lubricate, re-solder etc, etc. Having just bought the bongo and intending to keep if for the longterm I decided to take the replace with new approach. I did lots of ringing around,including a supplier on this forum for the fan, but ended up getting a new one from ebay. The club supplied the relay (v.fast delivery so thanks to all at bongo towers !).
Fitting both was straight forward with the assistance of the fact sheet from the members area the relay was in and sorted within 5 minutes max. The fan was slightly more tricky. I decided just to remove the front air intake to give a bit more room. Then under the fan housing are three phillips screws, undo those (preferably without dropping one onto a gravel drive),disconnect the power supply and plug in the new one. Re-fitting is a little fiddly because you are working by touch but patience and it was all done within half an hour.
Air intake back on and everything works perfectly. The main reason for new as opposed to repair is that I don't want to do it again

Excellent ict96 - now dont forget to keep that windscreen gutter drain free (which reminds me I must check mine!)
