Bongo Fury

Hello everybody,well done for a very informative site.As you will be able
to tell i am new to the club.I have just become the proud (but not very happy yet ) owner of a 96 green bongo. I am hoping that someone might be able to shed some light on the problems i am experiencing at the moment. Since i bought it i have had trouble with a screeching sound and it being sluggish and not seeming to go through the gears when first starting off. I thought the screeching could have something to do with the manifold studs .After having it serviced the guy who done it checked them and told me they were ok, he seemed to think it could be something to do with the turbo i was hoping this was not the case so i asked another mechanic who said its possible but could also be something else ie waterpump.Just wondering if these problems sound familiar to anyone and if anyone could shed any light on the matter so that when i take it to a garage i might be able to give some pointers.Any help would be greatly appreciated. looking forward to having it running properley.

First of all I recommend you put your location on so that a local BF member can advise you. I reckon that seeing a Bongo in good condition with a knowlegeable owner is going to be the best starting point and will give you a sanity check for what sounds are normal from a Bongo. Is it a manual or Auto- sounds like a manual from your comment of going through the gears etc. Once your Bongo is "on song you won't regret it!
Why not use the search facility for sluggish or have alook at some of the fact sheets in the members area- they might point you in the right direction.

Kevo did you buy the bongo with the problem Do you not have any comeback with the seller?

When you say screeching is it like air whistling or metal/rubber noise like a belt?

does it do this when stationary or only when moving


I had a turbo pipe come loose on mine and I didnt get the screeching but wow was it sluggish

As a complete guess Maybe you may have a leak in a turbo pipe.

That is a complete uneducated guess though

I'm in Billingham are you a maroon AFT. Saw it today and I've not seen that one in the area before.

I'm no expert but know a few things to look for, PM me if you want to meet up.

kevo - definitely see if you can meet up with a local BF Bongo owner. The Bongo autobox is designed not to move up gears too soon until gearbox has reached a reasonable temp. So for example, it wont make that final change into direct lockup (around 40mph) for the first mile or two. This is particuarly noticeable in winter. At this time of year I'm finding that after 3/4 mile or so it has settled down. But it may be that this is all thats happening in your case so thought I'd mention it.

Thanks for replies, the screaming is more a high pitched whistling sound which occurs when i press accelerator down. ozric it is a green bongo i have had it about 3 weeks i will pm you sometime,i am taking it to be looked at tomorrow to a bloke that has been recomended to me.I will see what he can diagnose.

I had this problem, and the lower turbo pipe (lift the passenger side seat and look down the bottom for a large diameter pipe with a jubilee clip) had come loose. Bongo was very sluggish and it made a screech that sounded very mechanical, but tightening up the pipe fixed it completely.
The other turbo pipe seems to make more of a whoosh noise when it's leaking.
