Fitting a Double Din Radio

Hi, has anyone successfully fitted a double din radio in their bongo? I just bought a double din radio from ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... &rd=1&rd=1 but is seems too small. I have (probably foolishly) removed the central plastic divide between the original single din radio and single din cubby box. On placing the new radio into the resulting larger hole it seems that it needs some sort of surround or fascia to make it fit neatly as there is a large gap all the way around. I am also struggling to understand how I am going to secure the radio into the hole when it actually does fit. I am ok with getting all the electrics to the radio, this is simply a fitting problem. I would appreciate help from anyone with experience of fitting double din radios in bongos. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Lee,
( a local lad i notice  )
As you are probably aware, DIN (DEUTSCHE INDUSTRIE NORM) Is a german unit of measurement for the size of a head unit. Single din is 50mm tall, double din 100mm tall, as described in the listing on e-bay for your rather smart looking head unit.

There is a din and a half size too, but that is not applicable here.

Ive never physically measured the size of the radio aperture in the bongo, but it should be double din sized.

Perhaps the centre strut makes the aperture bigger somehow when removed.

I think you will struggle to find a suitable (off the shelf ) fascia plate to fill the gap unfortunately.

With regards to the actual fitting of the unit, i assume there to be a cage that the unit slides into? They usually have little tabs at the side which have to be levered into the aperture to get a purchase on the inside of the bongo's aperture.

If you take the stereo to a car audio shop and explain the problem, they will sell / give you a piece of plain plastic sheet that you can adapt to trim the hole that is left after fitting. You will have noticed that the bongo has a step/lip that surrouns the aperture, it would be relatively easy to cut a small piece of black plastic sheet to size, then silicone it into place to fill the gap left.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on...

P.s. have you tried Pat Bell's? He's very good, and will come up with a solution if you take the stereo and the bongo to him.

Hey bigdaddycain

Thanks alot for the reply. I have taken your advice and booked in with Pat Bell. The Bongo is currently with him being fitted (he said he will probably need to make a custom surround/fascia for the radio). He seems really good value as well so I will let you know how it goes and post a couple of pictures of it looking good (fingers crossed hehe)! Thanks again, Lee

A lot of Bongo's come into the country with double din radio's in them.
When you fit a standard single din it is usual to fit a cubby box above the radio to fill the hole.
I suppose fitting a double would be the reverse.
Take out the single stereo and the cubby and the hole left should accept a double.
Hope this helps

Hey all,

Thanks for all your replies. I have just picked up the Bongo from the radio place and they have done a decent job considering the awkward size of the radio I supplied them with.

The final thing is pictured below, let me know what you think. (PS. The freeview box is hidden away neatly under the dash somewhere).

Thanks, Lee

Hmmm maybe the walnut is because its actually a Ford Freda rather than a Bongo. I was unaware that it was uncommon.

I think it is a Japanese aftermarket kit. They just stick on to the plastic facia. 5 minutes to fit and pretty cheap if you can find a supplier.
